Changin' Firefox's identification to win*.
Hi, I wonder if that is really possible, but I would need to use a Firefox version of Windows in order to access a particular site. Until now it worked and was possible, but they changed their policy and I have no access. (Of course I have no idea, that they started to filter for the X11 or linux strings in the name of my user-agent, or just wanting Windows stand there...) Is there a chance with Firefox to teach it, as it would be a version running under win* or which browser I should try, where I could define exact user-agents and try (and try)?! Thank you in advance, Pelibali Ps. I played around about:config already, but that didn't help too much! I removed there the suse-tag and rpm version, but in fact that's all it could do. Hmmm, maybe recompiling would be also a possible way or alternatively to install IE...

Install the User-Agent extension and you can set the string to whatever you like. Works well. Thank you; this was an excellent and extremely-quick idea! It works flawlessly, but until now I didn't find the winner user-agent combo opening that page :( I will also try Paul's idea, Opera, but preferably will not go for IE. The bl*diest thing is that I KNOW, that this particular page generally works with at least 6 Firefox releases, most of then under lin*! Making ridiculous policies like this really doesn't help people using "alternative OS"-es... Regards, Pelibali

That is the plan.. they do not want you to be able to do anything easily , so any current MS user won't be tempted to stray off the reservation too easily or quickly. IF they keep telling people they can't get their email, can't web surf etc *UNLESS* they stay w/ the market leader.. They can't see the Crab Nebula or whatever, w/o windows to run everything... they are ahead of the game.. or so they think The only problem they have is making sure those current, and any future users, don't find out they are just blowing smoke... because that tends to piff off even the Pope, or the Dalhi Lama, generally known as persons of equitable disposition and and reasonably unflappable in the face of um, er , well , mendacity. ;-D -- j So come to the moon I hope to see you soon Half a million miles isn't far to go -- song lyric

Try "User Agen Switcher" extension (http://chrispederick.com/work/useragentswitcher/) - works like a charm :) Dmitry
Thank you in advance, Pelibali

I used to use UserAgent for internet banking (at http://www.StGeorge.com.au) Very annoying because firefox worked fine as long as I said it was Opera on Windows. (Funny how there is no demand for Linux access, isn't it?) UserAgent worked for me but not "a charm". If I ever quit without switching back to "Default" I couldn't re-start firefox. Had to edit ~/.mozilla/firefox/default.xxx/prefs.js and remove any lines that mentioned UserAgent. Now that firefox 1.5.0.1 is out it "just works" without switching except sometimes it "just almost works" (can log in, can't type, Damn!) <snip> Konqi works well in those situations... if you tell it to lie and say it's IE AND take off all the info that says you are using linux. Hubby has a "requirememnt" to log into an "All Windoqws Only *for security* " Location... quit laughing you three!! I nearly choked my food supply up when I heard that.. it took all of two minutes to set up Konqui to do and easy peasy access to this alleged "secured by Windows" site.. He plonks in his required reports and most of the jokers who bought this system are none the wiser.. Need I say also, none of the alleged "Web Masters " seem to notice either.. It's a real trip. Also, it just takes one time to tell it to always announce itself as IE something or other when it hits that site. So, for folks who have problems getting User Agent to work in FIrefox, it's a quickie fix.. and free... as long as you have linux and kde. hehehehe -- j The weather is here, I wish you were beautiful.... song lyric
