Re: [SuSE Linux] Any ppp setup difference with Red hat?
990f new Linux users migrate from M$ Windows. If Linux is ever going to make greater inroads in the desktop market, it has to be made easier for the initial install and setup. After its up an running the newbie can learn all the things most of us take for granted with Linux. My setup is the way I like it. Wvdial is a console program that I happen to run in a Kvt window. It can also be run from the console if that is what you want. My point, however, is that it makes it very easy for a newbie to get up and running after the initial installation. -----Original Message----- From: Michael Lankton <satan3@home.com> To: suse-linux-e@suse.com <suse-linux-e@suse.com> Date: Friday, August 28, 1998 11:50 AM Subject: Re: [SuSE Linux] Any ppp setup difference with Red hat?
Redhat's netconfig and programs like it are not solutions. The user shouldn't have to start x just to initiate a ppp session. Maybe Redhat has made a console program available now, I don't know. The ppp howto may seem cryptic to the new user, but proper ppp scripts can be executed with a single command _at_the_console_or_in_an_xterm_, and it probably never hurt anyone to learn a bit about shell scripting. <A HREF="http://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/PPP-HOWTO"><A HREF="http://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/PPP-HOWTO</A">http://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/PPP-HOWTO</A</A>> <A HREF="ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/PPP-HOWTO"><A HREF="ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/PPP-HOWTO</A">ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/PPP-HOWTO</A</A>>

The keepers of the vault at SuSE are missing the boat if they don't take
serious look at including Wvdial-1.0 in the next distribution. I remember when I was new to Linux, getting ppp setup to connect to my ISP was the single most difficult part of the installation. Wvdial is child's play. It seems
would be easy to write a script and run it under YAST during the installation. At the very least make a SuSE rpm available in the meantime for newbies.
I have Wvdial setup as an icon under KDE. When I log into my system, it automatically dials my ISP as part of session management. Kbiff checks
a like it the
mail. It is just all too easy.
