I've had a similar problem when trying to ftp to an IBM Mainframe Host.
Stupid suggestion. Tried ncftp, netscape, or any other implementation of the ftp protocol?
ncftp, I installed it while I was still online! Then I downloaded xmftp and started to get suspicious when that did the same thing. I rebooted and chickened out (Win95) and it worked.
