You might look in /var/log/XFree86.0.log for any errors indicated by (EE). You'll usually see this message if you try to use anti-aliased fonts but don't have support in the server for it. The only thing I can think of is that you are using the wrong driver for your card. What kind of card?

This is the Render extension that's necessary for cool stuff like anti-aliased fonts in X, among other things that haven't even been implemented yet. Open up /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 (or XF86Config) and look for a line that says: Section "Module" Look through the section, and add or uncomment: Load "render" Save the file, and restart X.
