[opensuse] sles10 does not recognise HP 920 external sas tape drive
Hi all, I know this list is about opensuse and this is a sles10 question, but I'm sure there are people here that have valuable clues. I am running sles10sp1 64 bit on IBM xSeries 3650, and want to connect an HP 920 ultrium external sas tape drive using a straight through mini sas cable. This works fine at the bios level: the RAID controller (ServeRAID 8k) identifies the tapedrive, and the bios diagostics work. However: suse 10sp1 (fully patched) sees absolutely nothing. According to the novell website, this particular tapedrive is "fully supported" on suse linux enterprise 10. The tape drive is connected (according to the bios diags) to SCSI Bus 1 (ID 1, LUN 0) and the harddisks are connected to Bus 0 (ID 0, 1, 2 and 3) "modprobe st" loads the module, but still gives no /dev/st0. server:~ # lsmod |egrep '^(sd|st|sg|aic|scsi)' st 42532 0 sg 40248 0 sd_mod 25728 4 scsi_mod 156856 6 st,sg,aacraid,sr_mod,libata,sd_mod I tried the ubuntu 8.04 server live cd, and it sees the tape drive immediately, no problems whatsoever. I happen to have a second, identical machine, tried to connect it there too: same problem. What could be the problem here? Do I need to do anything else to get suse to see the tape drive? I did not install any drivers, because I'm under the impression that I don't need those. Am I wrong? Any ideas would be very much appreciated!! Anything interesting in dmesg|/var/log/messages ?, is there any documentation from IBM on how to configure it?, with the cciss driver on proliant servers for example, you have to "engage" the external SCSI connection to be able to use it... Hi there! Thanks for replying. I talked with IBM yesterday, and finally IBM came to the conclusion that the built-in sas connector is not suitable for connecting tape drives to the server. (It's meant for external harddisk storage) They advised me to purchase an IBM SAS HBA CONTROLLER PCI-E 25R8060, (or a similar HP thing) to connect the tape drive to. I have ordered this card, and should receive one on monday or tuesday. A pointer to this, was the fact that in the ServeRAID bios, the tape drive was seen, but not assinged a 'slot number'. (where all harddisks were) Anyway, after the weekend when I have tried the IBM HBA, I'll report back here with the results. Have a nice weekend! -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Hi all, For the archives: Today I confirmed that using the IBM SAS HBA controller option (25R8060) to connect the tape drive to the server solves this issue. Apparently sles10 on xSeries 3650 cannot talk to my tape drive over the built-in 4x mini sas connector. (even though opensuse 10.3 and the latest ubuntu DO!) I find it strange, but this is how it is. mj -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Try SP2, it was released already. Ciro -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
