Stupid question, I know, but are you sure he has an Ethernet card in his laptop? I believe the Ethernet is optional on the A20m. A friend of mine has the same machine and he thought he has an Ethernet card in it because the connector is available on the back side of the laptop. The fact was he purchased the machine without it. One way to check, ask your friend to login as root and list the contents of the /proc/pci file. See if there is any mention of an Ethernet card.

Everything seemed to go fine during the install, but we're only talking through ICQ, so it's more of "wait and hope" on my side, while he does all the work. What is happening is that his bult in ethernet doesn't seem to want to initialize. I'm trying to get more info from him now, but if anyone has any experience installing SuSE onto this laptop: IBM ThinkPad A20m 262-4XU please let me know if you had any problems with eth0 and if you fixed them, how? I'm trying to get a hold of his /var/log/messages file now.
Thanks for any help! -Steven

Yeah, he does. He uses it in Windows98. So far, he's pretty blown away by SuSE, but that'll turn to muck if I can't get his ethernet card working :-/ He's being a good sport so far though. he sent me his /var/log/messages file, and it is attached. If anyone can help, it would be much appreciated. Thanks, Steven -------------------------------------------------------

1) It sure doesn't look like he's running 7.2 Pro. 2) His startup shows a comment about Va-Linux Custom for the eepro100 driver. I have no such comment in my messages.
