[opensuse] Plymouth splash failure on 13.2-x64 Intel
Hello, Wonder if others using a Sandy-bridge Intel video card (i915) is having same Plymouth boot splash dark screen with the three ??? question marks dots. I tried all the possible solutions found by Googling but the issue continues. The problem has raised recently, I suspect caused by some package updates. I am seeing that on Tumbleweed, but not on 13.2. With Tumbleweed, I see it on two different computers. One uses Intel Sandy Bridge graphics and the other uses Intel Haswell graphics (still i915). The odd thing is that I have a earlier install of Tumbleweed (then called "factory") from May last year. And don't update that very often, but I did update it last week. And that one has the proper plymouth splash. That's on the same box (Haswell graphics). More recently, I have started to see the three green dots with Tumbleweed on an older computer with nVidia graphics (also Tumbleweed). There's also some randomness. On the computers with this problem, I see it perhaps 90% of the time. But occasionally they boot to the normal plymouth splash. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Thank you very much Neil for your report! It is exactly what happens on my 13.2 x64: randomness cases, sometimes I see the splash correctly, then it is worse to find a solution. Before I had a Nvidia laptop (old HP) and always had to make some adjustments to make it works with openSUSE but Intel never gave me issues so I'm very surprised to face it now! Regards,
I had investigated a lot on this problem and now I have a more clear vision of the possible cause of the plymouth boot-splash failure. First I forget to mention that I was using a newer kernel in respect to the standard installed in openSUSE 13.2, in fact I upgraded to the 3.19 from http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/stable/standard/. I noticed a thing that I think it could be the main cause of the issue: using the newer 3.19 kernels, by executing the command "sudo cat /sys/module/i915/parameters/modeset" I always obtained "-1" also by attempting to forcibly set this parameter to "1". I attempted a lot of things as reinstalling plymouth, upgrading the xf86-video-intel, playing on the grub boot parameters and so on without any success until finally I decided to testing again with an older kernel. Then I decided to install the 3.16.7-7-desktop kernel and now the output of "sudo cat /sys/module/i915/parameters/modeset" resturns "1"! Also now by rebooting the system I always get the plymouth boot-splash then I think that the issue being related in some way to newer kernels.
