[SLE] 9.1 broken due to partitioning change - help
My hard disk was split into several partitions, with hda1 containing Windows XP. The rest of the drive was set as an extended partition and a number of logical partitions, including hda10 (swap) and hda11 (reiserfs). I have deleted a number of the logical partitions and now linux is hda6 (swap) and hda7 (reiserfs). Not surprisingly, my SuSE Pro 9.1 did not boot, so I booted the DVD into installation and followed through the automatic repair system. This did not work. I then tried the 'update' option, which can see the Linux installation on hda7, but comments that the filing system entries ecpect hda11. I am then pointed to the following url for a solution to this problem: http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2004/01/sata.html I took a look at this from my Windows installation, but it talks about installing Linux on sata drives (I am using ATA drives). Obviously, I need to alter the entries from hda11 to hda7. How can I do this? The simple answer would be to create four small logical partitions in front of the swap, thus pushing Linux back up to hda10 and hda11, but this is a learning exercise for me. My Linux system contains nothing of great importance and I could even just reformat and do a new install, but that is the easy way out and I would learn nothing from this. Any help would be appreciated.

Try booting the DVD or CD-ROM in rescue mode. Mount /dev/hda7 on /mnt and edit /mnt/etc/fstab to use the correct partitions. If you are using lilo, edit /mnt/etc/lilo.conf and re-run lilo. If using GRUB, edit /mnt/boot/grub/menu.lst. Re-boot from the hard disk. HTH, Jeffrey -- Vote early and often. Apathy only encourages the bums.

I did exactly as you said, Jeffrey, and it worked. Great stuff! I used vim to edit the entries in /mnt/etc/fstab and then changed the GRUB entries. Next boot, everything worked fine.

Glad I could help. Not glad I knew how to do that ;) Jeffrey -- Vote early and often. Apathy only encourages the bums.
