Rsync works fine for me, backing up directories. I guess I have not yet learned to use rsync properly for whole system backups :-- I find that rsync is backing up all /proc stuff including huge "kcore" stuff also, when I have mounted my backup HardDisk on /mnt , rsync does the complete backup, and, then, duplicates the whole job on /mnt/mnt ! TAR works, for me, best for whole-system backups. p.s. ...... this script that does not work : .................. #!/bin/sh # # use rsync to backup whole system to /dev/hda6 # mount -t reiserfs /dev/hda6 /mnt # df cd .. rsync -auvzr --delete / /mnt/ cd df umount /mnt cd ~ ....................... best wishes ____________ sent on Linux ____________

There is an --exclude flag to rsync, so you should be able to eliminate the /proc system, but I must say I'd favour tar as well. Or some of the other more sophisticated tools, see http://www.storagemountain.com for some links and ideas. Somewhere off there is a link to a 'bare metal restore' backup for Linux, could be interesting. HTH Fergus
