SuSE 8.1- always runs at 640x400x16
Hello, I just installed SuSE 8.1 for the second time and at the option for enabling 3D acceleration, I chose no, planning to switch 3D acceleration on once I updated the driver with YOU ( I have a GeForce2 GTS vid card). On my initial startup, I ran YOU and obtained the latest nVidia drivers, then restarted. After rebooting, when the system tried to take me to the log-in screen (KDE), the screen flickered three times, then returned to the command-line. So I ran xf86config and chose 1280x1024x24 (resolution I used the first time I installed SuSE 8.1). When I run X, I keep getting a 640x400x16 virtual screen larger than my monitor (have to move mouse around to see other parts of the screen). When I go to Yast, it shows no video card or monitor? When I try to configure one, I get an error saying couldn't access xf86handleconfig, or something. The first time I installed, I had no problems- but I also chose to enable 3D when install asked me. Any ideas?? I don't want to have to reinstall SuSE again.

I had a somewhat similar problem where despite selecting a larger resolution YaST would keep setting me up with a lower one and I think it also happened after I selected the 3D acceleration. Patrick on this list helped me by having me configure it by loading up sax2. I believe we disabled the KDE desktop and then ran sax2 from the command line and configured from there and everything was fine after that. The sax2 interface looks pretty much just like the YaST screen for setting up the monitor and resolution, etc so it's easy to follow. -- Rick mailto:maillist@reumann.net

edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config file in the section screen, make sure that on all the lines the modes are in decreasing order. If not you have to correct, after depth 16 or 32 you certainly have 640x480 first. Yast set the modes in the order you choose them. That's all Catimimi.
