[opensuse] Installing Firefox 3 in openSuSE v10.3 x86_64
I am now running Firefox v2.0.0.18 (x86_64). I tried to use YaST to install Firefox v3.0.5 (x86_64) -- which is the current release that YaST shows me. The repository that I have been given is: <http://downloads.opensuse.org/repositories/openSUSE_10.3/ia64>. The YsST Package Installation window comes up; while the progress indicator is still at 0%, the Package Installation window collapses, and nothing is done. I went to the URL given above. What I found there is in fact a whole list of repositories, as follows: ***** Index of /repositories/mozilla/openSUSE_10.3/ia64 Icon Name Last modified Size [DIR] Parent Directory - [ ] mozilla-nspr-debuginfo-x86-4.7.2-1.1.ia64.rpm 27-Oct-2008 13:36 254K Mirrors Metalink [ ] mozilla-nspr-x86-4.7.2-1.1.ia64.rpm 27-Oct-2008 13:36 107K Mirrors Metalink [ ] mozilla-nss-debuginfo-x86-3.12.2-3.1.ia64.rpm 03-Jan-2009 13:15 2.4M Mirrors Metalink [ ] mozilla-nss-x86-3.12.2-3.1.ia64.rpm 03-Jan-2009 13:15 969K Mirrors Metalink [ ] mozilla-xulrunner181-debuginfo-x86-1.8.1.19-1.3.ia64.rpm 03-Jan-2009 22:09 65M Mirrors Metalink [ ] mozilla-xulrunner181-l10n-x86-1.8.1.19-1.3.ia64.rpm 03-Jan-2009 22:09 1.4M Mirrors Metalink [ ] mozilla-xulrunner181-x86-1.8.1.19-1.3.ia64.rpm 03-Jan-2009 22:09 6.2M Mirrors Metalink [ ] mozilla-xulrunner190-debuginfo-x86-1.9.0.5-3.1.ia64.rpm 03-Jan-2009 22:23 78M Mirrors Metalink [ ] mozilla-xulrunner190-gnomevfs-x86-1.9.0.5-3.1.ia64.rpm 03-Jan-2009 22:23 35K Mirrors Metalink [ ] mozilla-xulrunner190-translations-x86-1.9.0.5-3.1.ia64.rpm 03-Jan-2009 22:24 3.4M Mirrors Metalink [ ] mozilla-xulrunner190-x86-1.9.0.5-3.1.ia64.rpm 03-Jan-2009 22:24 6.7M Mirrors Metalink ***** So I now understand that I am to choose one of these as the repository to use. I would like some advice about this. -- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

x86_64 is for AMD 64 and recent Intel CPUs. ia64 is _not_ x86_64 it is Itanium from Intel. Cf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86_64 versus http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Itanium downloads.opensuse.org doesn't exist in DNS. The host name is download.opensuse.org. Also /repositories/openSUSE_10.3/ia64 isn't valid. http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/mozilla/openSUSE_10.3/ might be the repository you like to add. http://software.opensuse.org/search in general is very useful to find repositories. I visited the URL immediately above, and would like to clarify some of the things I found there. For example, There are 64bit versions of Firefox v3.05-2.3 marked "branded-upstream" and others marked "standalone". The difference between the two seems clear, but is there any advantage of one over the other? In either case, there is always another choice to make: Clicking on the name of a file causes the browser to ask me if I want to "Open with Install Software" (the website calls this "Manual installation"), while selecting the file and then clicking on "1-Click Install", causes the browser to ask if I want to "Open with YaST Meta Package Handler". What exactly is the difference between these two options? -- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
