Hello. I am still new to Linux. I recently bought and installed Suse 9.1 professional. From the cds I installed the rpms for the apache 2, php, and MySQL and I think a bunch of other stuff. I really want to get working the apache, PHP and MySQL. I got working the apache and PHP but I can't get working the MySQL. It appears that the MySQL deamon is not on, but I can't get it on. When I type mysqladmin ping i get this: "mysqladmin ping mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)' Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' exists!" I tried starting the mysql and this happened: nick@linux:~> su Password: linux:/home/nick # rcmysql start Starting service MySQL failed linux:/home/nick # I don't know what I should do. I am thinking I should reinstall the mysql, but I don't know how to do that. Or maybe I should try to download off the Internet the mysql rpm packages and try to install them with the exiting mysql stuff on my computer. I wouldn't know what things to delete if I installed new mysql stuff. Anyway, please tell me what I should do to get mysql working. I tried starting the mysql and this happened:
You need to set MySQL up with passwords using mysqladmin before you can use it. There are instructions somewhere - if you reinstall MySQL, I know that the relevant bit pops up during the installation process. Sorry not to be of more help. You can also use webmin to setup mysql with users and databases. I'm currently looking at rekall to admin a database but I needed to setup the database and user account first. -- Ken Schneider unix user since 1989 linux user since 1994 SuSE user since 1998 (5.2)
