[rc.config] Please tell me Im not going crazy...
Ive got something really disturbing happening. Today I decided to straighten out my mail configuration on my 7.1 machine. I started by reading my large SuSE (unleashed) book then the 7.1 manual. I proceeded to start yast1 and make the necessary changes to my SENDMAIL variables. Confident I made the correct choices, I fired up pine and sent a mail (my mail should be in "deferred mode only activated nt sendmail -q) Well... sending the mail, triggered my dod and the message went off. Perplexed I was going to post the pertinent info from my rc.config file e.g. cat rc.config | grep sendmail Much to my horror I found NO ENTRIES!!! I went back into yast1, searched for SENDMAIL and sure enough they were there (my setting were intact). Referring back to my 7.1 manual (pg. 198) It says "all settings are written to /etc/rc.config" and the next 2 pages illustrate the typical entries in rc.config for SENDMAIL. I have NO entries for SENDMAIL in my rc.config file and my mail is getting sent automatically rather than in deferred mode. Now what the hell is going on!!! :-/ Please confirm or deny before I throw this box out the window at wits end rob

Throwing Windows out of the box is better than throwing box out the window ;-) More seriously, sendmail settings are kept in /etc/rc.config.d/sendmail.rc.config. Many other subsytems migrated from /etc/rc.config into /etc/rc.config.d directory. -Kastus

Ideally I'd like to run sendmail -q via cron and have that trigger my dod script. Which I would do a seperate script like getmail wvdial sleep 90 sendmail -q any ideas on this. there is /etc/ppp/ip-up. (to be more precise, there is a ip-up.local, but I started to have a modified ip-up before that...) Never the less, look into that file, there are "case" structures "case ppp" and below that "case ip-up". Put your "sendmail -q" in there (and also the fetchmail call to fetch your mail) and be happy. To trigger the connection, let cron "ping -c1 www.cia.gov" (that's what they are good for) or any other host of your choice.
like getmail
wvdial sleep 90 sendmail -q
any ideas on this. Many thanks for the insight on the new location of sendmail variables

from the doc http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/smt_sendmail.html SENDMAIL_SMARTHOST="relay:mail.provider.de" : Here the host that shall receive the mails is entered. The additional part relay: configures a "mailer" that is given in the sendmail configuration. You may just enter the domain name provider.de then a request to the nameserver will be sent asking for the mailserver. Im at a loss..!! WTF rob

Hi Ole well I can certiannly change that (when I get home). Do you have sendmail -q working on your system with 7.1? If so, have you done all the configuration In my previous message? Is that necessary? In other words... how did you get it to work? ;-) also do you have any clue regarding the message " that name is not in my list of recpt hosts" This occurs when Im sending an email through pine or kmail I appreciate the help and feedback thanks rob

Hi rob, yes, but conix.com is a domain name. I mean it is not a host. Never the less, I get a DNS response. With other words, the mail server you'll use for relaying is 209.20.246.2 root@marvin:/etc/rc.config.d > nslookup conix.com Server: localhost Address: 127.0.0.1 Non-authoritative answer: Name: conix.com Address: 209.20.246.2 root@marvin:/etc/rc.config.d > But does this machine relay? I use the normal "outgoing mail server" in that parameter, without the keyword relay.
