For starters, I'd recommend that you install SuSE's APM kernel from the CD's. This will also place a .config file in your /usr/src/linux tree that can be used for your custom kernel. Go into /usr/src/linux and `make menuconfig' if you must, but don't play with APM *or* frame buffer settings. The SuSE kernel already has support for VESAFB (which has in my experience works well with G200s) and the APM hooks that you need for the kernel to play nicely with SuSE's APMD.
