Hello all. I've now shifted to an ethernet ADSL connection and so am connecting to the net via Linux now. But I have problem configuring KMail to communicate with POP servers. Even though I repeatedly confirm by logging into webmail that the password and username is all right, KMail keeps reporting that there was an authentication failure. Same happens with Mozilla Mail too, so probably this is not a KMail problem. (Mozilla Navigator keeps time-outing on me too.) I was able to access this mail via Windows, so there is not a problem with the account. KMail fails often, BTW. SIGSEGV (or whatever) faults abound. If I try to update via YOU, it says it was not able to retrieve the mirrors list and asks me if I would like to configure it manually, but I'm not sure what FTP address to provide. I'm now using my IMAP account, but I would really prefer to use POP. Thanks all. I'm now getting my Linux legs, but it's a rough time... -- (o- Penguin #395953 lives at http://samvit.org //\ subsisting on ancient Indian wisdom ... V_/_ and modern computing efficiency! :)

For example, only last week I was totally unable to access my Yahoo Mail through the web interface. Yet, I set it up through a POP account and it went through lovely first time every time. I've had the opposite happen with my old ISP. They kept insisting it was a problem at my end until they actually checked their servers. It ended up the fault of the ISP in the latter case and Yahoo in the first case. Draw up a check list of what you have done - double checked username/password and POP address etc. then armed with this have a word with your ISP. HTH -- Take care. Try using fetchmail, temporarily, to find out what the problem is. ~/.fetchmailrc: set syslog set no spambounce poll SERVER.ISP proto pop3, and tracepolls user REMOTEUSERNAME, with password YOURPASSWORDTHERE, is LOCALUSER here, and keep and call it via "fetchmail -v". Output will go into /var/log/mail. Then you can analyze what is really going on, or post the output here and we'll have a go. (the keep keyword above means that email is not deleted from the server, so you can retrieve it later via your preferred method)

Ah! And I wish all my accounts were imap! Thanks Carlos but the problem set itself right miraculously - must have been some ISP glitch. Sorry I forgot to report it here.

You can get as many free/non-free IMAP accounts you want with www.fastmail.fm. Not an endorsement of course... -- (o- Penguin #395953 lives at http://samvit.org //\ subsisting on ancient Indian wisdom ... V_/_ and modern computing efficiency! :)
