[opensuse] Connecting to wireless network with knetworkmanger
I'm using KDE 3.5 on openSUSE 11.0. I cannot see how to connect to wireless networks any longer since the upgrade to knetworkmanager. It used to be that clicking the knetworkmanager icon on the kicker panel would show all of the available wireless networks under wlan1 (or whatever). Now, no wireless networks show up there. Choosing Edit-Connections shows no connections. I'm using an Intel PROwireless 3945ABG card. 'iwlist wlan1 scanning' shows a number of access points when run from konsole. Thanks for any help! -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi, install the following in Yast: compat-wireless-scripts the appropriate compat-wireless-kmp-? for your OS type b43-compat-wireless-firmware if you are using a b43 driver that should get it working better. There is a bug in for knetworkmanager that is being worked on, and hopefully soon it will all be fixed. Let me know via the list if it makes things work for your wireless. Hmmm...I don't see these packages (compat-wireless-scripts, compat-wireless-kmp-XXX). What repo is required as YaST -> Software management doesn't show them? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi, try these: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home%3a/schmolle1980/openSUSE_11.0... http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/schmolle1980/openSUSE_11.0_U... I have tried adding the above repositories, installing the packages mentioned in this thread. However, for me it makes no difference whatsoever. KNetworkmanager remains deaf and dumb. It seems there's something more weird going on on my system here... Watching this thread, I tried the same thing. I, too, see no difference whatsoever. john@embelex:~> rpm -qa compat* compat-libstdc++-5.0.7-121.1 compat-wireless-scripts-20080615-5.4 compat-wireless-kmp-debug-20080615_2.6.25.11_0.1-5.4 compat-wireless-kmp-pae-20080615_2.6.25.11_0.1-5.4 john@embelex:~> I hope someone comes up with a workaround for us, or the kde team fixes KNetworkmanager soon. Hm. Reading through your dialog with the suse people, I see yours is not the same problem I'm having. Mine was discussed much earlier, and had to do with the kde people deciding that users didn't want to see a lot of extraneous AP's, so selected only a few to display. Their mistake, of course, was that where there are many AP's, the one you want is not necessarily among those displayed, and nothing we poor users could do would force KNetworkManager to display all AP's detected. So unless you knew the exact ESSID string to connect to manually, you were screwed. That's what I was hoping would be fixed soon. Sorry, I didn't realize there other problems, too. jp -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

John, Have you looked at iwlist from the command line? While I haven't experienced not being able see wireless AP, I have found iwlist to be very thorough in its listing and much more useful for signal strength determination. -- David C. I was sure I'd tried iwlist without success. But I just tried it, and got 8 "cells" within range. Thanks for making me feel silly, but helping me, James. Now I won't have to go to xp the next time I have to travel :-). I'd still like to see KNetworkManager fixed, though. jp -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi Doctor, I have the same card in my laptop as you. I also get nothing whatsoever to show up in KNotworkmanager (pun). No wireless networks at all and if I plug in a cable...it doesn't work either. It doesn't see any connections. I have filed a bugzilla here: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=420995 Please vote for this bug, if you have a Novell account. I hope this issue is resolved soon, because it's really troublesome to roam with my laptop. Regards, Joop

are you already updated, there are a lot of update on knetworkmanager alone. try re-probe the module manually, as root type # modprobe -r iwl3945 # modprobe iwl3945 if you already save one connection in knetworkmanager wait to see if knetworkmanager connect, if not try to connect manually from knetworkmanager. I use kernel module (compat-wireless module) from http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download, but i think the link of repo Mark show you is enough. regards, medwinz -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
I'm using this repo with good success on my iwl3945 card. The easier way other than searching for compat-wireless, would be to add the repo and run an update. Zypper automatically picks up the compat-wireless and the right kernel module associated with it. One thing I'd suggest you check is if you have the iwl3945-ucode (firmware) installed from the Non-OSS repo. That actually enables the wireless adapter in my experience. Good luck! -Anshul On Tue, Sep 2, 2008 at 7:22 AM, medwinz <medwinz@gmail.com> wrote:
