Hi
first, linux newbie. this may seem long... please bare with me.
i ran a bit of an experiment to see how easily i could update installed software. i installed gnome which in SuSE 9.0 is gnome v2.2. the suse ftp site has updates for gnome all pretty much to 2.4 (plus some other lib bits).
i downloaded all of these and ran my update like so
rpm -Uvh *.rpm
the process halted when packages i was updateing were required by some installed packages. ----<Text snipped>----
Hi, I have had similar eperiences to the one you described; it can be frustrating:( However, my advice is to become comfortable with a rpm install. apt and YOU are great but it is good to know what they are doing. So read "man rpm" If you are using Konqueror you can type man:/rpm in the "location" (url or file) title bar and it will open right up. As far as dealing with dependencies, I don't like to use --nodeps or --force unles I have to (for example:replacing a newer package with an older one) So what I like to do is use "kpackage" which is a gui version of rpm which shows the dependencies... I can then figure out what I need to remove or add. SuSE usually has all the ones there that are needed for an "update". After a little while you will have a feel which ones can be installed together, using the technique you did, and which ones need to be installed alone. In some case you need to remove a package (because of dependencies issues). Ones that come to mind are -doc and -devel. I used to use kpackage on another system and really liked it. But I couldn't find it on the SuSE ftp site. Does that indicate that SuSE disapproves of it? Does its use interfere in any way with proper SuSE updates?

Check kdeadmin-3 for kpackage. Stan
