The man page for sudoers(5) mentions that one kind of user specification is "+netgroup". I haven't encountered the term "netgroup" before, and "apropos netgroup" doesn't turn up anything. So what is a netgroup? What are netgroups useful for? How are they created and modified? Paul
IIRC, netgroup is an NIS concept. Like groups on *nixes, but
distributed across a network. This is a vague memory from reading. I
have so far successfully avoided NIS, though it probably won't last
forever, or even this summer.

I don't know exactly, but netgroups can be used by NIS (not by default). If you don't have NIS, you won't have/need netgroups.
