Until just a couple of days ago I had no trouble writing CDs on this 7.1 SuSE system, but for the past few trys I have been getting repeated failures when trying to copy a CD. The Fifo buffer fills completely, then the writing begins and makes it to between 1 to 3% then the Fifo buffer begins to empty while writing continues until the buffer is at zero at which time the system beeps, the CD tray ejscts and I get the Error writing tracks failure notice. Read and write speeds are both set to 8 and I'm working in DAO mode. I'm writing to 80 min disks and just realzed that I had the CD-R/RW Type: set to 74 but I wouldn't think that this is the cause in as much as it has always been there. CD for reading is a NEC CD-ROM Drive:466. Prnted below is the full output of cdrecord.out from the last attempt a few minutes ago. Any suggestion would be appreciated. So this started happening for absolutely no reason? Could be a hardware failure...

You can set the size of the CDR(W)? I have never used the 1.9 series of cdrecord, but I don't think that's an option there. As far as I can remember, cdrecord has always auto-detected the size of the disk...

Cdrecord 1.9 (i686-suse-linux)
cdrecord 1.9 came out 1999. I highly recommend you upgrade to the latest version (1.11a12) before we jump to any conclusions (I'm swinging toward hardware failure). -- Karol Pietrzak PGP KeyID: 3A1446A0

Well, you could be right, but just to check it out a little more, I switched to my Toshiba DVD drive as the read drive and got a similar response, only this timw the Fifo buffer filled to 100%, stayed there, while the writer quite at 3%. Switching to the windoze side of the house I get the CDs to write using either drive - Todhiba DVD or Nec CD-ROM for read and the Plextor to write. However, I note that I can always get a write to completion if I wrtie first to the hard drive and then from the hard drive to the Plestor but not always if I do a direct disk to disk. Of course this is different software, cdclone, so that may give some credence to your hardware thoughts even though the cd --> HD --> cd always works. I've downloaded the latest x-cd-roast and cdrcord and will install those next to see if it help any. Tonight I tried the same process under Linux that worked on the windoze side of the house and got the same results; write to HD first, then from HD to blank Cd and it works every time. So I'm thinking that this has something to do with the reading of the buffer holding the data but don't know quit how to access it. I tried installing the new cdrtools using the SuSE wizard but the process runs to a point ( two of the three green lights lit) and then stops; won't go any further so now I guess I need to learn the ./configure, make, make install method of getting things installed. Not having tried this is the past I'm moving cautiously. Any suggestions for the installation of the cdrtools and xcdroast packages gladly accepted. ;-)

I'm not familiar with cdclone.. is it a script? I couldn't find a site on google.com nor on freshmeat.net . What is the exact command you are using to do cd2cd burns? Is it something like: dd if=/dev/hd? of=- | cdrecord -v dev=0,?,0 speed=? -data -

What's the SuSE wizard? Sorry, perhaps I'm just ignorant. Schilling's cdrtools package doesn't use the "./configure && make && make install" method. Just a "make && make install" will install the utils in /opt/schily (You then will need to put /opt/schily/bin in your $PATH). Make sure you remove your current cdr utils so you don't have two versions: rpm -e cdrecord ; rpm -e cdda2wav ; rpm -e mkisofs . ...or you can just get my cdrtools 1.11a12 RPM which will do all that for you.
