Minimal or No KDE?

Hi, I've been using 8.1 now for a few weeks and really like it, especially Gnome2. I decided I would make it my only window manager so I thought why not remove all of KDE to free up some HD space. After doing this and rebooting, I discovered that I could not log in. The nice blue splash screen was replaced by some other ugly green screen with a username/password prompt, but no matter what I entered I could not log in. I managed to restore my system by booting into safe mode and entering startx at the root command prompt (which brought up Gnome) and reinstalling KDE3. What I'm wondering is: 1.) Is it possible to completely remove all of KDE and just use GNOME? I don't seem to think so because even when running GNOME I notice that there is a kdeinit process running. Why is this needed in GNOME? I assume to launch KDE based programs. It is usually on of the highest processes in top so it must be doing something... 2.) If I cannot remove all of KDE, what are the minimal set of packages needed from the KDE distribution to not screw up the splash screen after booting? It looks like kdeinit is in kdelibs3, any others? 3.) Is this just a stupid idea? Thanks! Josh Trutwin http://trutwins.homeip.net

Have you told Yast that you want to use GDM as the login manager? Otherwise I believe it defaults to XDM which is not as nice looking. Normally KDM (which is part of KDE) is used. For a Gnome-only system GDM (which is part of Gnome) is a better choice. Yast can setup both, but it has to be told which to use. Regards Ole

Ole, Thanks! I was under the impression that this login screen was something SuSE made and not part of KDE, a simple change in the Yast2 /etc/sysconfig editor and an uninstall of everything KDE and it works great. Gnome2 seems to even load faster without kdeinit running! Now if I can just figure out how to change that yucky gdm flower background image... Josh
