Yeah, microshaft figured flash was not theirs so they built the same thing and called it moonlight. Similar to .net - a.k.a. Java. Stupid Sun should have open sourced it years ago. -- kai www.filesite.org || www.4thedadz.com || www.perfectreign.com remember - a turn signal is a statement, not a request -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You're right about the democratic event website. I was chocked when I realized the sheer stupidity..and this comes from a supposedly young, techo aware candidate... Shame on you, Barrack. I was trying to play the video on your site. It appears to be locked down to only Windows computers.
I am running an upgraded openSUSE 10.3 system with Firefox 3.0x and Moonlight 0.8.
Please tell me when your system is fixed.

I think we need a jingle: "Stop the FUD!" These companies (or in this case, political parties) don't give a crap about 'cross-platform' or any of this. To them, Windows is over 90% of everyone, Silverlight is available on Macs as well I believe so then those folks are served, and to these companies/organizations, over 95% of the people being able to see their video is fine. Why do they use Silverlight then? One of two reasons: either the web designer either needed some of the tech only available in Silverlight (I'm not sure what that would be, but it's possible), was could have been the case with the NBC broadcast of the Olympics, but not with the DNC,which should just be streaming video. The other reason is because I'm sure Microsoft was paying off NBC Universal for the Olympics, and despite their stance against corporate donors, I have little doubt there's some "campaign contributions" going on from Microsoft to the Democratic Party. The Mono people see the Microsoft strategy, and they're working to make sure that if Silverlight does become an important part of the Internet, that we'll have a working, open source implementation of it so when the next Olympics or DNC or whatever comes around, a new user to openSUSE (or Linux in general) can watch it and not be put off to going back to Windows or Mac. That being said, I don't know what the status of Moonlight's compatibility with Silverlight is, so if anyone out there from the Moonlight team would like to chime in on that, I'm sure it would be highly appreciated. -- Kevin "Yo" Dupuy - openSUSE Member Public Mail: <kevin.dupuy@opensuse.org> Meet Bob Barr - Libertarian for President - <http://www.BobBarr2008.com/> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hmmm Vivendi? Are they out of court for bankruptcy? BTW, Bill Gates is the largest minority shareholder of CN Rail, that matters to Americans because CN *owns* (COUGH is owned by cough) Illinois Central. BTW, CN's servers to manage it's switches are run on Linux, let's hope that it stays that way. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I agree fully.
I fully support getting new tech working on Linux so that we can still be relevant on the web (don't ignore the gorilla in the room). Just look at Flash, everyone jumped up and down when it didn't work on Linux and it was closed etc, now it works and almost all the open source/Linux sites present their videos with it (or just using YouTube). My only concern is that when Moonlight 1.0 is stable MS would have moved to Sliverlight 2.0 (with some new closed payfor codecs etc); and when ML catches up they will have moved on to SL 3.0 and so on. The MS SL team is much larger than the Mono team. What about a YouTube type service that relays Silverlight content in some useful format? Sorry, this is getting OT. Keeping it OT (on topic), here's an article on where Mono/Silverlight is going by Der Standard with Miguel de Icaza. http://derstandard.at/?url=/?id=1216918402134 Of importance to us openSUSE users, "For instance last September Microsoft signed an agreement which results in Microsoft endorsing Moonlight - our own free implementation of Silverlight. So they are providing us with specifications, they are providing us with tech contacts, so whenever any specification is not clear, we have access to their engineers. Also one thing that is very unique: Microsoft is going to be distributing an add-on to Moonlight called the "media pack". And that add-on contains all the media codecs that Silverlight uses, so it contains the MP3 decoder, the VC1 decoder, WMV and all that stuff. We are going to provide Moonlight and they are adding the codec parts - and this is going to be totally legal, it's something that they are actually encouraging - that's pretty sweet." My hope is that such problems as seen at the Olympics and US political party convention will eventually be behind us. (I did write all my political representatives explaining that there was a problem with their site.) -- kai www.filesite.org || www.4thedadz.com || www.perfectreign.com remember - a turn signal is a statement, not a request -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Sorry for the double reply, but I found this in the Moonlight forum: -------------------------------- ""> I went to http://gallery.demconvention.com/ to watch some of the videos
/ and found they are using Silverlight. />/ />/ I know roughly what Silverlight/Moonlight is but have not followed it's />/ development closely. />/ />/ Can I please get some feedback from people who are already using />/ Moonlight if it is mature enough to play the videos I want to see before />/ I go to the trouble of compiling it all. / It is currently using Silverlight 2.0, which we are currently working on and is at this point not ready for use.
But additionally, they seem to use another plugin to download files"" which is not Silverlight and that we have no idea how it work. ---------------------------------- Thats one other way of getting the non-Win-OSx people out - use crossplatform Sliverlight, but confuse the issue with non-crossplatform plugins.
