I am running Suse 7.1 with the 2.2.18 kernel. The KDE Control Center was working fine for a while. But, now when I access it, the left index panel is blank so it is unusable. Apparently I have lost a file but can find no clue as to what it is.
The following files are opened when the Control Center starts: $ strace kcontrol 2>&1 |grep open|grep -v ENOENT|sort -u open("/etc/ld.so.cache", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/home/malusek/.DCOPserver_l187_:0", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/lib/libc.so.6", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/lib/libdl.so.2", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/lib/libm.so.6", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/lib/libutil.so.1", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/lib/libz.so.1", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/opt/kde2/lib/kcontrol.so", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/opt/kde2/lib/libDCOP.so.1", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/opt/kde2/lib/libkdecore.so.3", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/opt/kde2/lib/libkdefakes.so.3", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/opt/kde2/lib/libkdesu.so.1", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/opt/kde2/lib/libkdeui.so.3", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/opt/kde2/lib/libkio.so.3", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/opt/kde2/lib/libksycoca.so.3", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/usr/X11R6/lib/libICE.so.6", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/usr/X11R6/lib/libSM.so.6", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/usr/X11R6/lib/libXext.so.6", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/usr/lib/libjpeg.so.62", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/usr/lib/liblcms.so.1", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/usr/lib/libmng.so.0", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/usr/lib/libpng.so.2", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/usr/lib/libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/usr/lib/qt2/lib/libqt.so.2", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/var/run/utmp", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/var/run/utmp", O_RDWR) = -1 EACCES (Permission denied) It doesn't seem to be very helpful. kcontrol is contained in the kdebase package: $ rpm -qf /opt/kde2/bin/kcontrol kdebase-2.1.1-15 You can "verify" the package by: $ rpm -V kdebase-2.1.1-15 .......T /opt/kde2/share/apps/kfind/icons/locolor/22x22/actions/archive.png .......T /opt/kde2/share/apps/kfind/icons/locolor/22x22/actions/delete.png .......T /opt/kde2/share/apps/kfind/icons/locolor/22x22/actions/idea.png .......T /opt/kde2/share/apps/kfind/icons/locolor/22x22/actions/info.png .......T /opt/kde2/share/apps/kfind/icons/locolor/22x22/actions/openfile.png .......T /opt/kde2/share/apps/kfind/icons/locolor/22x22/actions/save.png .......T /opt/kde2/share/apps/kfind/icons/locolor/22x22/actions/search.png Optimal case is when no files are listed. I guess the .png files are listed because they belong to both kdebase-2.1.1-15 and kdeutils-2.1.1-15. I've also heard some rumor about problems caused by files or directories in user's home directory that were owned by root. I don't know anything more about it. It may not be related to SuSE 7.1. -- Alexandr.Malusek@imv.liu.se
