I have an external ISDN modem that I need to use on the HP notebook because SuSE asks for a non-existent 'slammo' module relative to the internal, 56kbps AC-Link by Conexant. The problem is, this adapter requires a driver when using any flavor of M$ Windows and SuSE also doesn't know what to make of this adapter. Does anyone out there have a clue as to what might be required to produce a driver? I have never done this. Secondarily, if one knows what 'slammo' is --other than 'gotch!'... I would be most appreciative for any help, as I'd like to get this box online! Thanks! ...CH
I have a USB-Serial adapter from Sewell that was advertised as Linux compatible. SuSE 9 Pro on my powernotebook.com C3:16 recognizes it but I cannot get my Kyocera 6035 to sync to the notebook through it. I am not certain if this is a Linux, SuSE 9 Pro, Kyocera, or adapter problem -- or a little of more than one. Wish I could be more help and encouragement. Sigh ... dmc (For the nitpickers among us, Mozilla 1.4 mail app defaults to top posting.) C Hamel wrote:

I have no idea who actually mfgs this adapter but I suspect that it is not
Radio Shack. Perhaps you could give me a little more info (like the model#
of yours, web site, etc.)...?
Thanks for your post! At least it gives me a little hope. <G>

Turns out I was in error when I said it was reported as an unknown device. Fact is, the adapter was recognized and a module loaded for it. I guess it was the modem(?) that was not being recognized, or something. The log entry follows: Jan 24 18:06:10 HP-YOGI kernel: hub.c: new USB device 00:0b.1-2, assigned address 3 Jan 24 18:06:10 HP-YOGI kernel: usbserial.c: PL-2303 converter detected Jan 24 18:06:10 HP-YOGI kernel: usbserial.c: PL-2303 converter now attached to ttyUSB0 (or usb/tts/0 for devfs) So... now the question is how to get an unlisted device to work. I mean, in the modem setup there is a drop-down list, and none of the items are as described above --specifically, tty/USB0. Could you point me in the right direction, please? This is a first, for me. I've never had this much problem getting online, before! :-\ <LOL> Thanks! ...CH

make a symlink from /dev/modem to /dev/ttyUSB0 (not tty/USB0 as you wrote above). Then all apps trying to use /dev/modem (such as kppp) will be happy. (Make a symlink? Use konqueror drag and drop or in a console as root: "ln -s /dev/ttyUSB0 /dev/modem")

You can most probably use your internal modem. Are you using SuSE 9.0? then the drivers are there already. If < 9.0 get them from http://www.smlink.com About slamrmo: =========== Smart Link Ltd. http://www.smlink.com Smart Link Soft Modem for Linux.... It provides full-featured 56K Voice Fax Modem. It will install: - modem kernel modules slmdm.o (modem core), slfax.o (fax) into '/lib/modules/<kernel-version>/misc' directory (standard linux modules' directory). - hardware specific kernel module slamrmo.o (for AMR/CNR/PCI) or slusb.o (for USB) into '/lib/modules/<kernel-version>/misc' directory (standard linux modules' directory). - country settings data file 'country.dat' into directory '/etc'. Also it will: - create character tty device entry '/dev/ttySL0' with major number 212 and symbolic link 'dev/modem'. - config you '/etc/modules.conf' file in order to provide possibility for loading the modem modules into kernel on demand automatically by kmod, when you are going to use them. =========== SuSE 9 does contain all this and installs it, however in my case yast did get the device wrong. As in the readme from smartlink it is /dev/ttySL0 and not what yast though it was. Under SuSE 8.2 I did install the driver myself, following the readme (and ignoring that it says Redhat all the time and never SuSE) and it worked fine as well. HTH, Matt
