[SLE] Will IDE and SCSI work together with SuSE?
![](https://seccdn.libravatar.org/avatar/cf3c2fe55a8fdc9673cfe248ab43b142.jpg?s=120&d=mm&r=g)
An Adaptec 29160 that I bought for one of my (older) FreeBSD platforms didn't fit. It probably will fit into the new PC that I'm installing SuSE on. This new system is fairly limited for my needs and I'd like to add some SCSI devices. So the nutshell of my question: Does Linux (or SuSE's implementation) work with both the IDE and SCSI interface? thanks for any help! gary kline -- Gary D. Yes it will. I use IDE disks (2 disks, 1 ZIP, 1 CD) on my IDE ports and (now in an external case) 2 SCSI disks and a CD burner. I boot from IDE, load the tekram card as a module (dc395x_trm modul). Then I can use the stuff in the external box. After finishing, I unload the module and switch the box off. For a "normal" system, I'd load the appropiate modul in boot.local. Have a read of chapter 16, SuSE boot concept and initial ramdisk. Hm. Looks like I've got my work cut out for me.... Mostly reading and getting familiar with the System-V side of the fence. --The nice thing about SuSE's distribution is that the setup is fairly straightforward. I happened into KDE and spent several hours poking around. Thanks for the tip on chapter 16; I'm hoping to turn on other engineer-types who are|(were) former DOS types; the more I can explain the better. gary

Yes. I'm using scsi Jazz and CD-RW via EATA-DPT scsi card on my predominantly IDE system -- no problems. You just have to have scsi and ide support compiled in or as modules. -- Never trust a man in a suit -- cll -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

It'll be awhile before I'm comfortable enough with the kernel-side of SuSE//Linux to touch anything on the kernel level. I've hacked at and rebuilt my FreeBSD kernels dozens of times....but have been using FBSD for 5 years. I did try Slackware on a 386SX laptop (1993); and Debian (1997); but not in any depth. If I can figure out howto run Linux ``headless'' (without CRT || keyboard), I'll probably have a couple boxes in here :) gary -- Gary D. I was unable to find any references to SCSI160 controller cards in Linux literature or mailing list archives. I found by experiment that the AICxxxx module worked in my computer with my 29160. Rob. muzh wrote:

You're a brave man.. I've got a multi-gig SCA(?) drive here and the Adaptec 29160 sitting here. I just-assumed the 29160 would fit into my old 200MHz-P5 motherboard. But nooooooo! I also `just-assumed' that PCI == PCI; I don't keep up with the gamers in the DOA/Windows realm, but evidently in the name of improving things, there is a new-PCI. Sorry for the rant.... Anyhow, since I just bought this new 500MHz PC, I figure whatever it has with take my 29160...... (*mumble*) gary -- Gary D.
