[opensuse] Mystery DVD
Someone tonight gave me a mystery CD/DVD - nothing seems to open it. It is supposed to be a movie / video. VLC won't open it. K3b says it is a blank DVD Although it clearly can be seen that something has been written to it. My guess is it was a copy from VHS tape to DVD and did not "finalize". What can be used to figure out what is on this disk ? Or is it now a coaster ? K3b is a bit limited in looking at optical media for diagnostic purposes. Try following ... 1) Mounting from command line. If that fails (which would be expected in this case) note error and continue below. 2) Try using dvd+rw-mediainfo <device> to obtain information about the dvd, if this this fails it is possible the media is not a dvd. if so try ... wodim -dev=<device> -atip if neither of the above show any data you have a coaster. The data is probably unrecoverable from a consumer grade device... BTW: It does not really matter which order you do the above, the wodim command will fail if the media is CD. 3) If the above shows that the media has been written to. Try isovfy <device> to see if the the data is in iso format... if not someone has done something like tar or video directly to a disk or the FS is not ISO. Some multimedia is stored on a variant of UFS, and you may need ufstools to look at the data further. 4) Use readom to save image of data (do *not* use dd, it does not fully support some of the low level data checks on optical media and data may be lost as a consequence). Then try and workout what exactly you have in the file. - -- ============================================================================== I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone.
