Hello all-- Apologies for this (hopefully very brief) off-topic thread. I'm hoping that a few references may be made, by the knowledgeable people on this list, to a few good sources of thought and conjecture regarding the following-- Although I presume (personally hope) other countries will pursue better alternatives, as a U.S. citizen and after reading a little about the Trusted Computing Platform Alliance, Microsoft's Palladium initiative, the "Fritz" chip and the cooperative responses by the U.S. government so far to Microsoft and to the entertainment industry (regarding "digital rights management") I have become somewhat worried about the future of Linux, and computing in general, in the U.S. Could someone refer to one or more good Internet sources where one may be able to read the comments and ideas of those who really know and understand this subject? Thank you. Steve D. New Mexico, US
Try searching the register site: www.theregister.co.uk And do a google search for Palladium and TCPA. You can also check slashdot at: http://slashdot.org Just a word, though this may be a thinly vailed attempt to lock down markets, it has a very good chance of going the same way that Intel unique cpu identifier ID# and many of the RIAA's attempts at copy protection - all of which were cracked/rejected by the consumer. Your Biggest immediate concern (though I'd watch developments with pallidium and tcpa) is the DMCA. Many congressmen/women have formally stated, on the record, that the DMCA was ill concieved due a lack of understanding of both the nature of technology and its ramifications on developments, research, and businessess. I would contact my legislators or the activist groups concerned/focused on re-addressing the DMCA. Cheers, Curtis On Saturday 30 November 2002 10:10, Steve D wrote:

The best place to get information about this is Ross Anderson's TCPA/Palladium FAQ, which is at: http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~rja14/tcpa-faq.html alan -- http://www.ibgames.net/alan Registered Linux user #6822 http://counter.li.org Winding Down - Weekly Tech Newsletter - subscribe at http://www.ibgames.net/alan/winding/mailing.html

Thanks for the reference Alan, I think one of the most disturbing aspects are under the heading "Toara bora" where the author writes: . At a talk I attended on the 10th July at Microsoft Research, the slogan had changed to `BORE-resistance', where BORE standards for `Break Once Run Everywhere'. (By the way, the speaker there described copyright watermarking as `content screening', a term that used to refer to stopping minors seeing pornography: the PR machine is obviously twitching! He also told us that it would not work unless everyone used a trusted operating system. When I asked him whether this meant getting rid of linux he replied that linux users would have to be made to use content screening.) Paul M.
Well, you've got Linux now, make sure you keep the disks. One of these days you're going to want them, when Windows becomes pay-ware per day, or per month, or whatever. And MS will have the opportunity to remove it's usefullness from your hard-drive when you don't pay up. Oh, yes, that will come within the next 18 months or less. I suspect that they will get around firewalls, somehow. You will probably have to give them a way in when you install Windows 2003. If they don't have it already. --wa2say At 06:38 12/01/2002 +0000, alan@ibgames.com wrote:
