Hi Steve, I've gotta run, but here's an idea: delete the file /etc/modprobe.d/sound, run YaST again and see if you can configure the sound card. Merry Christmas! - Carl
Did that and then it did recognize the CLabs sound card at next start up, the system knows it's there and suggests a setup, so the card itself seems working but I cannot configure it. It won't save the setup options giving the error: An error occurred during the installation of CT4780 SBLive! Value The kernel module snd-emu10k1x for sound support could not be loaded. This can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters. Indeed Carl's response to "SuSE 10.0 not responding to "shutdown-r now" seems to apply here. Not mentioned in the previous post as I didn't associate it... I just did a kernel upgrade along with the other YOU suggested updates after installing the video card. Just really looking to get newest drivers, but I remember there was a note about the kernel upgrade and rebooting afterward. It didn't warn me that it was gonna trash my system completely. ;-( But that's kind of what's happening here, a general crapping out of lots of things... Control Center reports Release 2.6.8-24.19-default Since my original post, I've tried a couple of other things and am having serious problems. Thunderbird opens and crashed closed immediately. K3B won't open at all, even by root. KCDRecorder won't open at all, even by root. Audacity Amarok pretty much everything multimedia seems screwed up, though Firefox still works and it browses OK. Open Office works, printer OK, mouse OK... I'm wondering if I shouldn't just reload 9.2 from scratch to clearup the mess, get the system stable, and then update all BUT the kernel. --But don't I need the kernel upgrade? It shows as a security issue... Should I just get the iso for 10.0 and upgrade to that? Or is that a worse can of worms? Upgrade to 9.3 and update kernel and all amd see what happens? I'm more and more confused about what to do... I'm not so skilled but I can sure make a mess of things in a hurry. lol... Thanks for any feedback. I'm anxious to see what opinions are out there about either fixing or replacing. Hi Steve, I didn't describe an either/or scenario. I install the non-kernel updates first. When that batch is done, I launch YOU again and install the outstanding kernel update. Then I reboot. I had great luck with 9.2, a couple of "show-stopper" problems with 9.3 (primarily Gnome) and then great luck again with 10.0. Most people had great luck with 9.3 and loved it. YMMV, and all that. But, if you're thinking of changing to a later version, I wouldn't "upgrade", I'd backup my data and install fresh. I'd definitely nail down my hardware configuration, first, then install on top of that. regards, - Carl
