[opensuse] Screen flickers every ~30s
Hi, I'm using 11.4 here, and the screen flickers every 30 s in KDE4. It is possible to trigger this by stopping and starting the "Display Management change monitor" service in KDE service manager, although stopping the service doesn't eliminate the flicker. I should also add that this didn't occur with factory some weeks ago. Has anyone else seen this? Does anyone know of a way to make this stop? I see the very same. But only on one screen with a dual head setup. The flickering screen is connected via a analog VGA cable. While the non flickering one uses DVI. Both signals are coming from one nVidia GeForce 6200 card.

My mantra these days is that the nvidia driver is not ready for prime time. Meaning the latest from both openSUSE and nvidia. I had to stop using it as it causes all kinds of problems, as discussed in other threads here. My discussions were for 11.2, but it is a version that keeps current, so it is running the same X as 11.4. All hell broke loose at the end of February.
Does anyone know of a way to make this stop?
I had to go over to the nouveau driver on 11.4, and the nv driver on 11.2 (the kernel module for nouveau seems not to exist on 11.2 - another thread here). Sad think is that I also have to so software rastering. Yuck. -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems / Ramböll RST Ramböll Sverige AB Krukmakargatan 21 P.O. This problem isn't specific to the nvidia drivers as my card is a radeon. It is most likely the combination of KDE4 and Xorg that causes this, since I have seen something similar in the past. I have seen this on both openSUSE 11.4 and Arch Linux. This issue started with the ~ Feb 15th Xorg updates. I have seen this primarily with nvidia hardware. I have no idea what the technical reason for it is, but the screen will be fine, the about ~ 20-40 seconds there is 1 pronounced "flicker" you can't miss, then the display looks normal for the next 20-40 secs. I primarily see it on my dual-head box. Are you running a nvidia chipset? -- David C. The description matches my experience.

No, mine is an Ati radeon card. Regards, Peter -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

And, of course, for the radeon boxes I have, the new xorg corrupts the display with KMS and segfaults with nomodeset: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=678264 -- David C.
