[SLE] Random freezes, even after installing other distro!
Hi all, I've been using 9.3 now for a while, but it's unusable, due to random lockups/freezes. The problems started after a clean install of 9.3. The system crashes at completely random times (using KDE as window manager). When the systems freezes, I'm unable to switch to another runlevel, and the music hangs. My Windows XP doesn't show this kind of behaviour, so I think it isn't a problem with hardware. I've installed today Fedora Core 3 with KDE 3.3, but the freezing problem was still there. Is it a problem with the kernel? With KDE? I dunno. I'm now quite desperate, because I absolutely don't now how to tackle this problem! My specs: AMD Athlon 64 2800+ 1024 MB Ram Sapphire Radeon 9600 Gigabyte K8VT800 Pro Mainbord Thanks in advance, Guuzjo

I had freezes on my AMD box that didn't show up with XP. Turned out it was hardware, memory to be exact. I had to throttle back the memclock timing to DDR333 from DDR400 when I bumped the memory to 1024 from 512. Once I did that, everything stabilized and ran fine. Same here, with Windows '98. It would freeze under Windows only if I was recording video. Turned out the memory error was in the high part of the RAM, which I use regularly under Linux, but hardly ever under Windows. Run your memory checker before looking for other explanations. It may save you a lot of time. :) Regards, Pieter Hulshoff

Well, there could be several reasons. One is memory (run at stock settings and memtest it); another is overclocking (run at your motherboard's defaults); another is a dodgy power supply. But, it could be your Radeon card. Are you using the ATI/fglrx 3D drivers? I had really annoying random lock-up troubles on my Radeon 9500 Pro and SuSE 9.2 with these until I found a fix, which involved recompiling a kernel module to turn off fast writes. There can be other issues with the ATI Linux drivers, though, also leading to locking. For more information, see the Linux forums at www.rage3d.com which is a great resource for Radeon-owners. Numerous bugs and fixes have been posted there. A friend had lock up problems with his Radeon on WinXP which he traced to the "ATI Tool" - some kind of overclocking gizmo supplied by ATI. He wiped it off his hd and the problem went away. Just a guess. Hope you find a fix. My next card will be an Nvidia one. :) Fish

Do you have an AGP video card? The reason I ask is because I have an older AMD and it has had this same problem since I bought it... and there is no resolution to the problem (outside of replacing the AMD with an Intel CPU... but that would necessitate replacing the motherboard too... not worth it). Either way, I'd suggest monitoring memory and swap usage, see if it climbs. hth, ken -- A lot of us are working harder than we want, at things we don't like to do. Hi . I had similar problems at one time and finaly traced it down to a line in the XF86Config Option "NvAGP" "3" but only caused the problem with one video card an old FX5200 one of the early ones , I commented out any mention of NvAGP and it was fine until the card bit the dust a couple of years later. I ran the memory test for more then 6 hours, without any error. So, my memory is ok. I don't use the ati drivers, so it can't be that. The problems started with 9.3, suse 9.2 ran fine. Forgotten to mention that the first post. Guuzjo. On 5/22/05, Guus de Bruijn <guuzjo@gmail.com> wrote:
