[opensuse] disabling x temporaily

Hello: I would like to install nvidia graphics driver manually by running nvidia-install script. This can be done only if x is not running. I tried to turn off x temporarily in a vt by "init 3" which had no any effect. I also tried to turn off x by: systemctl stop graphical.target systemctl isolate graphical.target systemctl stop xdm.service systemctl isolate xdm.service None of the above had any effect on x window, they even haven't restarted x. I also killed Xorg, but x haven't stayed off, it restarted automatically. How can I turn off x temporarily? This is openSUSE 12.2 with systemd. I've been able to log in as root from a console (Ctrl alt f1) and issue init 3 and it works fine. (I run a Radeon community video card, so its not exactly the same). 13.2. -- _____________________________________ ---This space for rent--- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Now I remember that I asked the same almost exactly one year ago. There is no solution for this openSUSE 12.2 'feature', neither init 3 nor systemctl works. I modify the question: How can I set the system too boot into console mode instead of graphical one? Same as always, append 3 to kernel cmdline at boot time. In your case, choosing a failsafe Grub stanza might also work, but it too might need a 3 appended. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
