[opensuse] openSUSE Ends EULA
Linux Journal December 2nd, 2008 by Justin Ryan Just as those of us in the U.S. were preparing to pop our turkeys in the oven, the hard-working fellows at the openSUSE Project — the community organization behind the openSUSE Linux distribution — were lifting the lid on their own creation: a brand new license for openSUSE 11.1 — that doesn't involve a EULA. According to an openSUSE Spotlight post from openSUSE Community Manager Joe Brockmeier — better known to the community as Zonker — the openSUSE team have been hard at work designing a new license for the upcoming openSUSE 11.1 release, and as of last Wednesday, the finished product is ready for public view. Of key concern in designing the new license was the End User License Agreement involved with existing versions of openSUSE, which required users to click-through an acceptance screen in order to access the software. The new license will include a "license notice" which informs users of their rights under the GPL, but will not require an "acceptance click." Brockmeier's post stressed that the new license is just that, a normal Open Source software license, and not a EULA, a point reminiscent of the brouhaha that erupted in September within the Ubuntu community over the license attached to Mozilla's Firefox browser. Speaking of other distributions, the new openSUSE license has a distinct whiff of Fedora about it. According to Brockmeier, the Novell legal team borrowed the license used by the Fedora Project — with the blessing and assistance of Fedora Project Leader Paul Frields — as "[it] has worked for them" and because there "[isn't] any point in reinventing the wheel." For our part, we're certainly glad to see another EULA bite the dust, and commend the Novell team and the openSUSE community for taking this important step. -- "I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. Hi Fred. While I'm glad to see this happen, as someone who has been paid for writing articles, I thought I would point out a few things: 1. Linux Journal is a copyrighted site. IANAL, but I do believe that your post has violated their copyright. 2. Generally, when you post about an article, I would recommend only posting the first and/or second paragraph, and then give the link to the article. Sites generate income through ad revenue, and the writer generally gets paid by how many times the page is viewed - at least that's how I get paid . Please support website authors(like me :-) The original article is available at: http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/opensuse-ends-eula Thanx for the heads up though. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

First, I also get paid. Second, I didn't copy it from their site.

Yep....sure is. Fred -- "I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. While I totally agree with you -- support the site and support the authors. Sometimes articles get taken offline and it is nice to have an archive somewhere (there will be plenty of archives of this mailing lists on sites indexed by search engines). But to be honest, I have no idea what Linux Journal's policy is for keeping archived old articles. Local news sites seem to be the worst, sometimes pulling articles after a month. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

True. I don't even remember who sent it to me.....but I passed it on. ANYONE who reads my posts, KNOWS that if I get it from Infoworld, Zdnet or another pub., I either only send the url or a paragraph or two with it....at most. I DON'T have time to chase down everything someone sends me. Fred -- "I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. No sweat Fred, just checking. I didn't want to step on anyone else's toes, much less yours. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I find it a little unfair to assume he forgot it. If you read the offtopic list, you will have noticed Fred posts a lot of articles in there and always abides to your 2 points. The fact that he didn't do that here was enough for me to see somthing went amiss out of his hands. I realize that and I have spoken to Fred about it and realize if was an over site. I was just concerned about covering the list on it in case an issue arose. Copyright law is such a PITA now that you unfortunately can't be too careful. I always make sure that I provide a source, or I don't post it, just to cover my own...... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
