Linux Hardware purchase/ Software reccomendations
I am looking for a webcam for a Linux box. It's been YEARS since I even messed with a webcam, but do to a friends house being repeatedly broken into, he wants to set up a webcam, and find some motion activated software, to email the images. 1. Don't most usb webcams work nowdays? 2. Anyone used a motion activated web notification program. Thanks for the help Randal

I recommend Logitech 3000 Pro or 4000 Pro. These use the pwc module which is now included in the kernel and require 0 work. Just plug in and enjoy. Learn more here: http://www.saillard.org/linux/pwc/ http://www.lavrsen.dk/twiki/bin/view/PWC/WorkingWebcamsWithPWC To view the cam and upload snapshots to your web site, I recommend camstream: http://www.smcc.demon.nl/camstream/ For motion detection, I am aware of, but never personally tried, motion: http://www.lavrsen.dk/twiki/bin/view/Motion/WebHome For an example of Logitech 3000 Pro being operated with camstream, see my page: http://home.earthlink.net/~bryantyson/bryanscams.htm Bryan *************************************** Powered by Mepis Linux 3.4-3 KDE 3.5.2 KMail 1.8.3 This is a Microsoft-free computer Bryan S. When did that happen? pwc used to require all sorts of black magic, kernel fiddling, sacrificing goats at full moon, etc. and I (for one - I know of others) never did get it to work. I might be wrong about the current pwc being in the kernel. I might be thinking of the "open" pwc that was in kernel 2.4 but only gave a postage stamp size of picture without the "closed" pwcx module. I think adding pwc to the kernel was what led to the disagreement described here: http://www.smcc.demon.nl/webcam/ All I can tell you is the new pwc apparently comes with Mepis, so hopefully this is also the case with SuSE. I had to do absolutely nothing to get it to work. Just plug in the cam and the module loads. Within seconds I am viewing the cam on camstream. For anyone who needs pwc, download links and instructions are available at http://www.saillard.org/linux/pwc/ Bryan *************************************** Powered by Mepis Linux 3.4-3 KDE 3.5.2 KMail 1.8.3 This is a Microsoft-free computer Bryan S.
