RE: [SLE] Security and Accounts management in SLESx & SuSE 8.x
I've seen setups where they've scp'd /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow to various machines with cron. What suggestions would you have for a minimally exposed machine? What are people using to manage 20+ servers with shared or different accounts? We are beginning to look at NIS, OpenLDAP, and possibly a kerbrose solution for our SuSE SLES7, SLES8, and 8.x machines.
I suppose it depends on how exposed the servers are. If it's only 20 machines and they're going to be exposed at all I'd probably go with rsync over ssh and some scripting.

YP is easy and generally works, it's just horribly insecure. If you ever expect to have non-Unix servers it might make sense to start with something like ldap to avoid problems later. -- -ckm
