Could it be that you need a newer version of pppd? Look in linux/Documentation/Changes for which version you need.
I downloaded the ppp-2.3.10 package from the SuSE ftp site. That didn't solve the problem.
I seem to remember hearing abot this as a bug in kppp. Apparently it uses an incorrect method of finding out if the kernel can do ppp. The method worked before, but now it doesn't.
