/opt, huh? well, i cannot call myself a SuSE user yet, and RedHat only rarely made use of /opt and with the following partition table, RedHat ran for years with no problems: Name Flags Part Type FS Type Size (MB) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ hda1 Boot Primary Linux ext2 106.93 / hda5 Logical Linux ext2 3150.29 /home hda6 Logical Linux ext2 213.86 /tmp hda7 Logical Linux swap 139.83 hda8 Logical Linux ext2 106.93 /var hda9 Logical Linux ext2 1077.52 /usr hda10 Logical Linux ext2 1406.53 /usr/local hda3 Primary suspend2disk 279.66 well, i guess SuSE goes at things differently, and i am starting to believe that my enthusiastic try to make everything but /boot reiserfs (p. 101 of the german manual says that SuSE's default is /boot ext2fs and everything else reiserfs) - i'll post another mail about reiserfs in a second. maybe i'll go with ext2fs for now... from the above partition table you can see: i like partitions. but somehow SuSE does it differently, and the manual doesn't help me very much. could you guys get me on track? i want the following partitions: / obviously /home 3 Gb because i have loads to store /tmp 200 Mb used for makes by root and generally useful /var 100 Mb to prevent /var/log from filling / /usr for SuSE's RPM's /usr/local definitely for my own compiles /opt well, i guess i need that i have something like 5710 Mb available, so maybe someone could give me an idea of how to split up the load between the above. specifically, i need help with /, /usr, /usr/local, and /opt because i have no idea what SuSE dumps where. could you help me split up 2410 Mb between the four? and in general, what programs go in /opt and what in /usr? on solaris it's commercial vs. non-commercial. is it the same for SuSE? thanks a bunch! martin [greetings from the heart of the sun]# echo madduck@!#:1:s@\@@@.net -- oxymoron: micro$oft works

and in general, what programs go in /opt and what in /usr? on solaris it's commercial vs. non-commercial. is it the same for SuSE?
For my main SuSE 6.1 system, which has rather a lot of stuff installed: root@galaxy:/home/chris > du -s /opt 310761 /opt root@galaxy:/home/chris > du -s /usr 1438662 /usr root@galaxy:/home/chris > du -s /usr/local 110167 /usr/local So I use around half a gig for /opt (which is for commercial programs, like Solaris). I use about 1330MB for /usr (excluding /usr/local). I don't keep /var and /tmp separate (due to disk space constraints) but if these were separate then 100MB should be enough for /, although for safety I would have more like 300MB... My SuSE 7.0 machine has /opt at around 370MB, and /usr around 710MB. Splitting up your 2410MB between /, /usr, /usr/local and /opt, I would have something like: / 210MB /usr 1450MB /usr/local 300MB /opt 450MB My /usr/local is quite small compared to yours, so you might want more of the /usr space to be in the /usr/local partition. At least you have an idea of how much space /opt requires, so you can make an informed decision yourself. Well I am not sure how much Suse changes the places for the installed software from their "norms", KDE for example likes to be in /opt. This is my /opt. Generally when I install things I like them be installed where they default to. Filesystem 1M-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/hdb7 2016 1101 812 58% /opt In my /opt I have ... FrontBase SMSWizard aolserver dx executor fortify fsuite gnome grub h323 jakarta kde kde2 kde2_upd lost+found lutris-enhydra3.0 mozilla netscape nps office52 oracle pan pilotsdk salt skyrix slab smacx_demo tngfw virtuoso-lite webplus wp www My /usr is .. Filesystem 1M-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/hdb5 8063 4525 3128 59% /usr Since you are going to use 3 of your 5 gigs for /home you only have 2 gigs left. I would probably give /usr 1.5 and /opt 0.5. But it really does depend on so many things. Perhaps you could give the lot to /usr and make /opt a symbolic link into it. That puts the decision off somewhat ! Good Luck p.s. I would advise you to be very wary of the resierfs released with Suse 7.0, it is not the state of the art release, and it has huge problems which make it far too unstable for serious use in my view. If you check back through the mailing list archives you will find it to be great source of grief. Cliff
