Re: [SLE] 1024 barier: Does SuSE 7.0 do away with this?
Lilo 21.5 was suppose to fix this and I hope SuSE has updated the package to the latest Lilo. Is there gonna be a release announcement for SuSE ftp? Why can't we download 7.0 from ftp yet? I am getting sick of waiting. mk

What 1024 barrier would that be? SuSE (and all Linux distros) have been able to use all of the hard drive for years. The 1024 cylinder limitation was introduced because of limited address space in the BIOS, and since Linux doesn't make use of the BIOS apart from at boot up, there is no limitation to what parts of the drive Linux can access.
Having said that, of course, there's still the problem of booting the kernel. All the files that LILO needs to boot must be located below the 1024th cylinder, which is the only limitation. AFAIK this is still an ongoing problem.
Hope that helps (and noone else has replied between me checking my mail and my reply being sent - that's the problem with dialup :-( ), Chris -- Unfortunately I'm back on V90 (yeah, right) dialup for the rest of my life, so I apologise in advance for any time delay in replies.
