Re: Re: [SLE] Questions on setting up aliases, .bashrc
First of all the one line I left from your message explains where you should create your own aliases. Create in you home
Hello, directory a file called
.alias and add all your own aliases in there.
Yes....however I don't enforce this.
If you want to create system wide aliases so all users will get them you can put them in /etc/profile.local.
A much better idea. By putting the aliases in that file, you can then add things like the following: if [ $USER = "root" ]; then #Add aliases for which only root can access alias hello='/some/program' alias goodbye='/some/other/program' fi
Second, the system wide aliases are stored in /etc/profile
I wouldn't add anything to this file, since if you upgrade your version of SuSE, the chances are that any changes made to this file will be lost. Just my £0.02p tip :-) --Thomas Adam

This, though true to the SuSE spirit, is unnecessarily complex. If you want certain profile attributes sourced, create a profile.d directory, and create a profile.whatever file with rx--rx----- permissions for whatever group. This way, only users that are a member of said group even have read access to that file.
