I've got a hosed up lilo in suse 8.0. I updated the yast-lilo the other day and apparently it has a bug and really messed up my system. about my box: hde1: windows2000, set as default (extended partition next) hde5: linux swap hde6: suse 8.0 reiserfs hde7: libranet (end of extended partition hde3: dos shared data partition when I attempted to add libranet yast went batty and ran on and on...I finally stopped it rebooting and when I was able to get back in using resuce disk many of my base directories where gone.../etc, /bin/, /sbin, etc. I had a mondo rescue disk and that replaced all of it, but, I still cannot execute lilo. My lilo.conf is fine. The error I get when I run lilo is "sorry, cannot deal with device 0x0102". any way of getting lilo and my system back short of reinstalling? --karl __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? It cannot find the drive. It is trying to write to the ram drive or cd. I forget. Boot with the rescue disk. Mount the drive as follows: (assuming your root is hde6 from your example) mount /dev/hde6 /mnt (mount drive) chroot /mnt /bin/bash (switch root dir to mounted drive) lilo (rerun lilo) Regards, Doug

Follow-up: Dougs suggestion worked! With a little tweaking my suse install is back on-line...Thanks Doug! --karl __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? HotJobs - Search new jobs daily now http://hotjobs.yahoo.com/

This is nice! A Followup so we KNOW if the suggested aproaches worked or not. That is something i miss at times. I follow a quite a few threads on this and several other lists, but too often the results of the suggestions are never told. -- /Rikard ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Rikard Johnels email : rjhn@linux.nu Web : http://www.rikjoh.com Mob : +46 70 464 99 39 ------------------------ Public PGP fingerprint ---------------------------- < 15 28 DF 78 67 98 B2 16 1F D3 FD C5 59 D4 B6 78 46 1C EE 56 >

Rikard: Yes I did respond...Doug's advice did help me get things back. However I was able to duplicate the problem, so, apparently there is a bug in YAST2-lilo in suse 8.0 which I reported to suse. --karl __________________________________________________ Yahoo! - We Remember 9-11: A tribute to the more than 3,000 lives lost http://dir.remember.yahoo.com/tribute
