Re: [S.u.S.E. Linux] Re:
Hi, can anyone tell me if SuSE 5.2 can be installed and running on ThinkPad 560E? Best, Frederic Avi Schwartz ??????
You haven't mentioned which thinkpad you have but I know it is not the same as mine (TP 701C) just because you mentioned you have a built-in floppy drive (the 701 has an external one).
With my laptop I am using an external CDROM drive connect via a PCMCIA card. My CDROM is an EIDE CDROM. To install SuSE 5.2 on my laptop, I inserted the CD into the CDROM drive and booted from the supplied install floppy disk. I loaded the PCMCIA module and the CDROM was immediately recognized. From this point on the installation was a breeze.
If your CDROM is also an EIDE one, I would recommend using this installation method. If you CDROM is SCSI, it might get a bit more complicated unless the module for you PCMCIA SCSI card can be found on the installation disk.

Hi,
I think this message came to me in the most right time, as I planned to buy the ThinkPad to run SuSE 5.2 tomorrow, now I have to wait and see if anyone can give me the suggestions to this problem. Thanks, Edgar, you posted a very good question.

comp.os.linux.answers, comp.os.linux.misc Subject: Help! Thinkpad + SUSE5.2 Woes
Hi!
Has anybody succeeded in getting SUSE5.2 to work with their Thinpad? Forget about XF86, or /dev/hda*. I am talking about bare minimum booting off the installation floppies.
I am having the problem that the machine simply WILL NOT BOOT with SUSE5.2. I have not had any problems installing SUSE5.2 in any desktop machines. The laptop has built in floppy drive, and a CDROM connected via PCMCIA card (which for the sake of this email, assume that it is not plugged in). Here is the problem:
1. I create floppies using rawrite.exe or dd using the images eide01, eide02, or eide03 (I tried them all!) and the supplemental disk. 2. I insert the boot floppy into the floppy drive. 3. I turn on the machine. 4. I get the splash screen: "Welcome to SUSE" 5. I get the boot: prompt. 6. After a few seconds, the machine begins the booting process, hanging entirely two lines after the "boot:" prompt.
This same floppy works wonders on my other desktops, but simply will not work on the laptop!!! I have had the same problem using Debian 1.3.1 on this machine. RedHat 4.2 boots and installs beautifully.
I would ideally like to have SUSE5.2 running on this machine, so any help that anybody can give would be GREATLY appreciated.
Happy Linux'ing!
