[S.u.S.E. Linux] kbiff not finding X
I would like to try out kbiff on SuSE 5.1 but it continually reports it cannot find X in the compilation process. I have tried the usual paths but cannot seem to get it find whatever its looking for in X; either libs or includes. Anyone have kbiff working? Care to share how you compiled it under SuSE? Thanks. ---------------- Michael E. Perry mperry@basin.com - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
OK, I admit to being clueless, but this is beyond even me. I reset my BIOS to boot from the CD and then tried to re-boot, and I got the error message that there was no boot image available. I am using the S.u.S.E. CD that I got at the Linux expo in NC. Can anyone point me to some help? Unfortunately I can't help a lot, but I believe there are ways of getting a boot disk either off the CD or off the Net at S.u.S.E.' site. I have never put much effort into this. I hope one of the more experienced folks here will be able to help with this. Im sure there is documentation on how to accomplish this. I'm not sure what is up with the CD. I've never attempted to boot directly off it. I'm just offering the boot floppy as an alternative approach. I had the same problem until I flash upgraded my bios. Prior to this, even though I was supposed to be able to boot from CD-ROM, I could only boot from Windows NT's CD-no Linux CDs. After flashing the BIOS with a newer version, I can now boot from the Linux CD. Alternately, you can use the rawrite utility to make a boot floppy. You won't be sorry.:-) Terry

Terry, I did that, and it almost works. I can't get to my email though. I'm using the server to check my mail now! My Linux experience is soooo limited. Isn't yast the admin tool? Shouldn't I be able to use it to set up my gateway and router address, and IP and so on? I got the fvwm2 thing to work, but when I loaded xtetris, it locked up, saying the CPU usage was 100% I'm kinda lost. Going on the web now. Any helpful hints would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Shouldn't I be able to use it to set up my gateway and router address, and IP and so on? Wow! If I remember correctly...I used YaST to set up after I did it manually. I'm sorta dubious about the YaST's abilities as I have run the printer setup several times and gotten differrent results:-) The ip-connect thing was very easy with my current ISP. /etc/resolv.conf search laker.net nameserver 192.188.72.18 nameserver you.rdn.sn.um use minicom -s to find what your isp does and put in: /etc/ppp/chatscript ABORT BUSY ABORT ERROR ABORT 'NO CARRIER' ABORT 'NO DIALTONE' ABORT 'Invalid Login' ABORT 'Login incorrect' ' ' ATZ<YOUR BEST MODEM STRING> OK ATDT<YOUR ISP NUMBER> CONNECT ' '<these are two single quotes> ogin: your login name ord:'\qyour password'
the 'q\' means quiet #chmod o-rw /etc/ppp/chatscript touch /etc/ppp/options later put your options in above. chmod u+s /usr/sbin/pppd $ /usr/sbin/pppd lock modem crtscts asyncmap 0 defaultroute /dev/modem 115200 connect "/usr/sbin/chat -f /etc/ppp/chatscript" then when the above worked I placed it in options file and ran them as: /usr/sbin/pppd < /etc/ppp/options then I did: cat > netme usr/sbin/pppd < /etc/ppp/options enter, enter CTL-DC or whatever to get out...and can now get in the net by either netme or ./netme How far have you gotten now? I'm running KDE and it has it's own way of getting mail to the desktop, very professional. the fvwm2 thing

<Lot's of helpful stuff snipped> I didn't get it resolved, unfortunately. I tried to use my old copy of /etc which we backed up before the install, but still no dice. I don't have a modem, but I connect directly to my server and out through that modem via a network card. Still trying. Wish me luck, and thanks for the help! This list has very nice people! Have you installed the xdevel package? It contains header files needed to compile X applications. Ciao, Stefan - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
