Press release from Novell about KDE/Gnome
I've just got this in a newsletter direct form Novell. It should ease everybody's mind...I hope. KDE and GNOME There has been a lot of debate over the last few days in the media and on message boards about what is happening regarding GNOME vs. KDE at Novell. Here's the situation. All future enterprise-class Linux product releases, including Novell Linux Desktop, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and Novell Open Enterprise Server, will continue to ship with both the GNOME and KDE desktop environments. In upcoming versions of Novell enterprise applications, the default desktop environment will be GNOME. When customers install Novell Linux products, they will be given the option to choose either the GNOME or KDE environment during the installation process. If the user makes no explicit choice, GNOME will be installed. -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== Take care. So is that all - the final result of the big debate on both this list and opensuse? SUSE will have GNOME as the default environment. That's all. I hope the specialized SUSE KDE package will still continue to ship. And the Novell OOo KDE package also? Any SUSE people can shed light on this? Shriramana.

Don't know where this comes from and whether this is complete. But it speaks about enterprise products.

For SUSE Linux versions, there will be no changes, no default will be set.

We do continue to invest in both GNOME and KDE and therefore the items you mentioned are supported, Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, aj@suse.de, http://www.suse.de/~aj SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126

I received it this morning as part of an official Novell newsletter. It mentioned desktop SuSe so I felt that it was relevant to the recent 'debate' we have had on here :-) -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== Take care. And of course that is what really is at issue. Simply making the KDE available has never been an issue for me. Even if the KDE were not included in the distribution, I could always build it, so long as it was being developed - and I had enough horsepower. I will leave it at that. Some people understand the more subtle points on this issue, and some do not. It would only cause problems to continue dwelling on this matter. Thanks for the clarification. Steven
Man it's about time. I got tired of trying to explain how default can have more than one meaning. This exact message should be put in the FAQs, and sent to this list once a month. Everyone saying they are leaving because Gnome is default... I mean wow I understand their pain of having to click on KDE during install.... And man am I old today. It's my 23rd Birthday today... nyway back on topic: The people who downloaded and din't pay for crap saying they were going to stop usng it, I TRIED to tell you, it's enterprise stuff only, not the home user stuff. -Allen
