[opensuse] awesome window manager? Where?
Howdy all, I tried to install awesome window manager on my system, Zypper says the package doesn't exist and YaST doesn't know about "awesome" either. So, I added the following repository to my repo-list: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/windowmanagers/openSUSE_12.1/ Still, no awesome :-( Does a package exist at all, or have I to compile it myself? thanks in advance, --kdl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Now depends how bleeding edge you want to go. I am using awesome 3.4.11 from my repo home:toganm:wmanager 11.4 and 12.1 is available though I`m running on 12.1 mind you that it will affect X11 packages as well along with cairo. You will also find some other awesome related packages i.e libraries and freedesktop module If you decide to install please submit bugreports as I want to push the package to factory at some stage Togan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Hi, I decided to install Awesome to see what it was all about. I first installed it from yast using the factory repo: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/windowmanagers/openSUSE_Facto... After installing Awesome, I tried to log in using Awesome as the window manager from the KDM login screen. However, it didn't appear in the list of window managers so I wasn't able to select it to log in using Awesome. I logged in again using KDE, then used yast to uninstall Awesome and then install Awesome 2. When I tried to log in at the login screen using Awesome 2, it also didn't appear as an available selection. I uninstalled Awesome 2 using yast, then removed the factory repo in yast. Next, I used Togan's repository for 12.1 by adding it via yast. Then, I used Software management to select Awesome, Awesome Desktop, and Awesome bling-bling and install them via yast. After installing, I found Awesome was a selection at the KDM login screen. I selected it, then tried to log in. It tries to login and the screen goes black, but everything crashes and I end up back at the KDM login screen. After multiple tries to login, I had the same results and went back to KDE. Any thoughts? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

If you can post .xsession-errors that might help But 1) Awesome blingbling requires oocairo related packages as well did you install them also. and later you need to use blingbling in your rc.lua 2) Also you need to install awesome-shifty and awesome-vicious without them awesome will not funtio 3) awesome from my repo also requires xorg-x11-libxcb-utils xorg-x11-libs and startup-notification these should from my repo as well since they include xcb related stuff Togan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

If you can post .xsession-errors that might help But Hi, I can't find .xsession-errors file using find file/folders. I can find xsession in /etc/x11 but no errors found there, it only says that KDE session is already running.
1) Awesome blingbling requires oocairo related packages as well did you install them also. and later you need to use blingbling in your rc.lua
Yast installed oocairo as a dependancy when I installed awesome
2) Also you need to install awesome-shifty and awesome-vicious without them awesome will not funtio
I installed awesome-shifty and awesome-vicious this evening. I was expecting yast to pick them up as a dependency on the initial installation if they were needed, but no matter. After they were installed, I am still having the same problem getting awesome to launch.
3) awesome from my repo also requires xorg-x11-libxcb-utils xorg-x11-libs and startup-notification these should from my repo as well since they include xcb related stuff
These were installed as dependencies on the initial yast installation, except I can't find a package specifically named startup-notification. I found two libstartup packages previously installed, and this evening I installed startup-notification-devel. But awesome still won't launch.

How about the following commands in a konsole window: cd ll .xsession-errors What were you using to "find file/folders". you don't need startup-notification-devel. You should have libstartup-notification from my repo. Normally packages from my repo would have *TM* ending in their rpm numbering i.e libstartup-notification-1-0-0.12-22.4.TM.i586 Without seeing the .xsession-errors it is difficult to see why it does not start. Hi Togan, I just wanted to write back to see if there is anything else that I might provide to you to help you figure out why the awesome installation won't start, since the .xsession-errors file that I sent didn't show anything. I think it has stumped everyone, and that is ok. But I want to make sure that you have received all my replies and that we are at a dead end. Patrick, Often I prefer to look in build.opensuse.org and see if its even there. The search in the upper right corner of that page works really well. software.opensuse.org/search is either always out of date for factory, or it simply doesn't have factory in there. (I don't know which). So if I want to know if a package is available in factory, I'm totally mislead by it. I've posted too many times complaints about packages missing from factory just to find out, its just the search that is missing it. software.opensuse.org/search is either always out of date for factory, or it simply doesn't have factory in there. (I don't know which). For software.o.o/search you have to tell for which distribution to search - 12.1 is the default.

The user experience is bad indeed for those of us that use factory for testing. Can we at least get a banner that appears before the results that notes Factory is not being searched. The banner is only needed if factory is selected in the pull down, so it would not even be noticed by the vast majority of users, but for those of us that might want to search for packages available for factory, it would highlight that we only getting partial results.
