k_athlon vs. k_deflt for the Duron CPU
I'd like to post a question all you learned people. Could the issues I'm having be caused by the fact that 8.1 installed the Athlon kernel pkg? I know the Duron is the bastard little brother of the Athlon but could something be causing it to act weird and would I maybe be better off with the k_deflt rpm? Cheers! -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe.. I tell you what you should see.

Ur, uh, I assume you are talkig about the DRI thing? If so. I am a complete intel drone. Intel Mobo, Intel CPU. We both seem to have this problem. STH

This crap is slow and generally unpleasant. With all the lockups and other stuff. This is just the last straw. Oh well. Guess I'll bite again maybe in a few months when more patches are out or wait for 8.2. :( -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe.. And of course, you have submitted a bug report to feedback@suse.com. STH

If I knew what was causing the "random" lockups...sure I'd report it. If I could get anyone to believe me that DRI/DRM doesn't work and that sax2 in 8.1 can't even figure out what my monitor is..but in 8.0 it can. I would surely report it. I've told my issues to a few SuSE people I know and I got back " but it works for me"... Tell ya the truth I have no clue what was causing it. Weird messages like "AGP unavailable" isn't much help either. I don't mean to sound cranky. It's just late..I just got 8.0 back on the machine and the apt repository is fried..so I have to wait to update. :( -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe.. Being a complete Linux newbie, I'm not sure if this is fundamental to your problems, but per AMD a bug relating to Athlons & Durons & AGP existed in kernels prior to 2.4.19. Supposed a "bug-fix that effectively eliminates this problem" was placed in 2.4.19. To me, that means they didn't correct the issue, just worked around it. Check out http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/white_papers_and_tech_docs/2669... I'm running a stock 8.0 with 2.4.18, with a 1.2 GHz Duron & ATI Radeon 7000 AGP with no problems. I've been considering trying the Athlon kernel, but now I'm not so sure. Maybe I'll wait till 2.4.20. -- Mike If you can stay calm, while all around you is in chaos...then you probably haven't completely understood the seriousness of the situation.
Two days ago I installed the default 2.4.19 kernel on a 8.0 system. This is one of several Athlon sytems I have at home all running 8.0. All have behaved wonderfully when patched. Seti is running on all of them and they are running 24/7. I have had issues with the 2.4.19 8.0 system since the kernel was installed. Several are mentioned in the 8.1 threads. This morning I found the system locked up. On reboot the USB keyboard had to be unplugged and replugged to enter the password. It worked fine until the login screen. I am willing to placed my money on the 2.4.19 kernel being the culprit. Henry On Sunday 13 October 2002 02:41, Ben Rosenberg wrote:

My experiences also suggest this. Since upgrading (by a fresh install and restoring /home and data) from 8.0 (with self built kernel) to 8.1 my system locked solid (with the disk light solid on) three times in the first day. I downloaded and installed kernel 2.4.20-pre10 from kernel.org and since then it has worked without a problem. Though it could be something to do with my hardware as I had the same problem with the SuSE supplied kernel when I installed 8.0.

On the lockup my disk light was also on. Thanks for the tip. Henry
I am running SuSE 8.1 with the k_athlon kernel on a 1500+ Athlon with an ATI AIW 128 and not experiencing any lock-ups. 3D works perfect on everything; games, screensavers, etc. I keep rebooting for various other issues such as sensors and gkrellm, playing with GRUB and multiboot OSes, etc. Stan

I have a Duron 800Mhz processor in my main computer. I'm still waiting for 8.1 in the mail, but for both 7.3 and 8.0 I've used the k_deflt kernel package, never the Athlon package. And never had the problems you've posted. Have you actually tried k_deflt yet? Have you actually tried k_deflt yet? Well, a seperate athlon pkg only came into existence with 8.1 I believe. And SuSE 8.1 installed it by default on install. *shrug* I guess I could email Hubert or feedback and ask them why they seperated the athlon kernel when it doesn't work right on the duron. *shrug* I don't know. I've fought with this thing for over a week..I'm wornout...8.0 works. I'll use that for a while. -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe..
