I see a lot of great discussions on this topic but I haven't seen a solution as of yet? I've also "randomly" experienced this issue on an IBM Thinkpad x120e.
There is no 'solution'! Linus is not Microsoft; the Linux community has neither the deep pockets to pay vendors to make their stuff work with Linux, not the market dominance to make them come begging. Many of us try making Linux work on the hardware we are given rather than get to configure hardware we know will work and work well with Linux. That we 'blame' Linux for this is a reflection on ourselves. As I've pointed out, I'm seeing variations in production runs of what is notionally the same hardware. I'm also seeing that different version of Linux, openSuse, Mageia, Fedora (I'm a RPM sort of guy :-) ) deal with the same hardware - same unit, same chip revisions all the way down, back to the closet of junkware - install and respond to idiosyncrasies of the hardware differently. Occasionally I get told to try PCLinuxOS, its supposed to be more conservative and/or accommodating. http://www.pclinuxos.com/ I've managed to avoid that so far :-) "Random" happenings in this context means one of a few things apply. First up, is, as I say, the hardware is marginal for the version of Linux you're trying. Try a few others. We won't excommunicate you if you use something other than openSuse. You might also find that some of these new-fangled features were not "ill-thought-out changes that serve no purpose". Second up is that you may be configuring them in a non-standard way. Perhaps your hardware or business demands this. But remember, all these PCs were intended to run Microsoft. If you want something that's not like that then go with Apple or get a Solaris SPARC machine or one of the Solaris certified machines from Dell, IBM or HP. You may or many not consider that a "solution". It all depends on your budget and what's available to you. -- `But that's ... completely ridiculous! ... [Y]ou could claim that *anything's* real if the only basis for believing in it is that nobody's *proved* it doesn't exist!' `Yes, you could,' said Xenophilius. `I am glad to see that you are opening your mind a little.' - `Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows', J.
