I fired up Firefox 1.0 (running on SuSE 9.0 Pro) today to find a folder missing in the bookmark manager. I manually opened all the other folders and can't find it. The "search" function" looks for bookmarks but not folders. The bookmarks are still "there" because, when I do a search on the name of a bookmark that I know was in the folder, I am able to find it. I've been trying to trace back and see where the folder is "hiding" but have had no luck. I'd appreciate a tip. TIA Kelly Morris

Bookmarks for firefox are a flat file. There exist folders only as a html entry/designation in the file. If you have lost a "folder", it has either been deleted or the bookmark file has been mangled. You might try looking for a url that you remember was there by opening the bookmark file with an editor. The other missing url's should be right above or below (or both) of the one you remember and find. Then you could edit the bookmark file with firefox's bookmark editor and make your corrections. The file is: ~/.mozilla/firefox/xxxxxxxx.default/bookmarks.html with the (8) Xes being whatever code firefox assigns your setup. If you do not feel capable, forward me the file (bookmarks.html) and give me the name of one of the missing url's and I will try to retrieve the missing information for you. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/photos

OK. The following is the entry in bookmarks.html for a viewable folder that immediately precedes the "lost" one: </DL><p> <DT><H3 ADD_DATE="961099767" LAST_MODIFIED="1084410869" ID="rdf:#$WTZpM">Mozilla Project</H3> <DL><p> After the URL entries for the above folder, comes the following entry for the "lost" folder: </DL><p> <DT><H3 ADD_DATE="1063434932" LAST_MODIFIED="1095736133" ID="rdf:#$tUZpM">New</H3> <DL><p> They look pretty much identical to me, so I don't know why the latter is not viewable nor the bookmarks that accompany it. The bookmarks are still there.
If you do not feel capable, forward me the file (bookmarks.html) and give me the name of one of the missing url's and I will try to retrieve the missing information for you.
I've got the bookmarks file opened in Bluefish. It's huge. Lemme root around in it for a while and see if I can figure it out. My experience with HTML is that some diddly little thing can render the whole file, or a large part thereof, unreadable. Although, what would cause a diddly little thing in this case is beyond me. Thanks much. Kelly

Patrick - It turns out that I have three (count 'em) Firefox folders, each with its own 'bookmarks.html" file, and it took a while of mucking around to figure out which is the current one. After lotsa sleuthing, I found the errant folder and all its bookmarks nested deep within another entirely unrelated folder. How it got there is a mystery. Thanks for your help. Kelly

No mistery, when you open firefox and it askes which profile to use and you choose one that is already in use, you have made a new profile. Each of the odd-looking directories under .mozilla/firefox (with the eight random character names) is a separate profile. You can force the profile manager to start (just to see) with: firefox -ProfileManager note: many commands/programs provide helpful information available by using the command structure: firefox --help Try it. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/photos

Thanks for reminding me of this. I had forgotten that, in my efforts to get Firefox going, I had created more than one profile. But having more than one profile doesn't explain why or how a folder full of bookmarks is in its place one day and, on reboot the following day, is nested deep within a different folder. Anyway, as long as I found it and got it back to its proper place...
You can force the profile manager to start (just to see) with:
firefox -ProfileManager
note: many commands/programs provide helpful information available by using the command structure: firefox --help Try it.
Thanks. I'll try both. Kelly
