I'm still running 5.4.5.1 because this 6.0 upgrade seems like it wasn't thought through properly. In my case the dialog box is quite explicit. it says: "The LibreOffice built-in help is not installed on your computer. "You may either install it from our website or your system’s repositories, or read an online version." There's no LO help in the standard openSUSE repositories AFAIK and I haven't looked at other oS repositories so sometime ago I installed the help from the LO site and it worked. It no longer does, so I suppose some careless openSUSE update has broken it. It's in usr/lib64/libreoffice/help/ in my case. LO help has been chaotic for quite a while. I understand it's the difficulty of maintaining help that is accurate with a continually updating code base, then exacerbated by openSUSE's packaging policies. Fortunately I don't usually try to do anything ambitious with the program any longer, so I'm not often looking for help.

I assumed that when I received an error message stating that, whatever F1 was looking for is "not installed on your computer", that something might be missing. I am a bit curious about capitalization of libreoffice. Some posters have listed it as Libreoffice, other as libreoffice. Mine is definitely lower case. What is going on here?

I'm still running 5.4.5.1 because this 6.0 upgrade seems like it wasn't thought through properly.
In my case the dialog box is quite explicit. it says:
"The LibreOffice built-in help is not installed on your computer.
"You may either install it from our website or your system’s repositories, or read an online version."
There's no LO help in the standard openSUSE repositories AFAIK and I haven't looked at other oS repositories so sometime ago I installed the help from the LO site and it worked.

There is also an > empty /usr/share/LibreOffice/help directory. > That directory is empty here for LO6 on 42.3 too, while /usr/lib64/libreoffice/help/ is not empty. LibreOffice Writer here also announces built-in help is not installed. I also have a non empty /usr/lib64/libreoffice/help/, but there is nothing below the sub directories: tree /usr/lib64/libreoffice/help/en-US/
I have that too.
My /usr/share/libreofffice directory looks like:
There's nothing there on my machine.
I am a bit curious about capitalization of libreoffice. Some posters have listed it as Libreoffice, other as libreoffice. Mine is definitely lower case. What is going on here?
Mine's all lower case. I don't know what's with the upper case or the mis-spelling in previous posts by one poster.
I tried to be a bit ambitious and downloaded the help file by clicking on the "libreoffice built in help" tab: download.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/stable/6.0.3/rpm/x86_64/LibreOffice_6.0.3_Linux_x86-64_rpm_helppack_en-US.tar.gz
which yielded an rpm: libobasis6.0-en-US-help-6.0.3.2-2.x86_64.rpm which I tried to install via: sudo zypper install libobasis6.0-en-US-help-6.0.3.2-2.x86_64.rpm.
I received an error message: Problem: nothing provides libobasis6.0-en-US >= 6.0.3.2 needed by libobasis6.0-en-US help-6.0.3.2-2.x86_64
I have libreoffice-base 6.0.3.2-18.1 installed. The version numbers are so close that I assume libobasis6.0-en-US is equivalent to libreoffice-base. I also tried the recently suggested sudo zypper -v in --force libreoffice-l10n-en which appeared to succeed but the directories in both /usr.share/libreoffice and /usr/lib64/libreoffice/help are still empty.
And application still fails to function.
I forgot how to display what file are in an RPM file. Help would be appreciated.
don't belive the above process will accomplish what you want, but...
rpm --help
rpm -ql <file.rpm> will display the files withing the rpm
I displayed the files in my: libobasis6.0-en-US-help-6.0.3.2-2.x86_64.rpm
and found they were loaded into /opt. I moved them to: /usr/share/libreoffice/help
and now the F1 command in libreoffice appears to function. Thanks for all of the suggestions, PROBLEM SOLVED:-) I hope.

Too fast! Doesn't work very much. Maybe I put it in the wrong place? First click on magnifying glass always brings up "Zoom & View Layout". If click help in that window get not installed error message again. So I placed the files in /usr/lib64/libreoffice/help/en-US and the system appears to work. That's because zypper is not trying to install the file you downloaded, but instead is searching on your defined repos and not finding it there. You can create a directory somewhere, put the rpm there, and then add that directory to the list of repositories zypper knows about. Then zypper will offer updates from that new local repo. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.3 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)

There were, in the early days of MS-DOS, some damn fine office-grade word processors. I'm sure some of the Greybeards here have fond memories.
From a more objective POV, as far as office efficiency went, this probably climaxed with DOD3.3 and Wordperfect4.2. Mosy of the 'secretaries' preferred WordPerfect to MS-Word. Perhaps the latter's 'style sheets' were more ... sensible ... but those of us who grew up with VI/EMACS and ROFF/TROFF weren't enamoured with the WYSIWYG anyway.
My observation at the time was so long as Microsoft threw advertising dollars that way, MS-Word sales dominated. But magazine reviewers are fickle. Microsoft added 'features' and turned the _word_ processor into a document processor, subsuming functions that had nothing to do with with the basic from office/secretarial and taking in the work of the "Art Department": produce brochures and newsletters and even, *shock* *horror*, books! So it became a 'feature war' and he who has the longest bullet list wins. We saw that in the AV wars as well. Never mind that boot sector viruses went out with booting from 8" floppies, they were still on the lists! Never mind that 95% of the people using MS-Word don't use 98% of it's features. And the issue with OpenOffice and LibreOffice was that in order to show that Linux has an office suite every bit as good as Microsoft it became a bullet list war. Not a 'productivity' war. In fact the Linux side won a few points, like having a UI that was a bit retrograde but the one people preferred, and had consistent indenting, which was a big hit for producing military-style documentation. But we are still back to the 95%/98% issue. My biggest issue is that I want to print pocketable 'prompt cards': 5x3 things with title and bullet lists of reminders and perhaps little graphics. Setting page size is no problem; fonts and layout and all the rest is no problem. Persuading my printer to accept 5x3 cards via the manual feed is the problem. The point I was trying to make is that presence or not of the LO help files has no relevance to the problems I have trying to use them in the real world. Even before I print the problems I have had in the past in LO are better solved by consulting the Net-of-a-billion-lies than the help files that were present in those revisions. -- A: Yes. > Q: Are you sure? >> A: Because it reverses the logical flow of conversation. >>> Q: Why is top posting frowned upon? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I can't recall ever having used the help facilities with 'writer', but then I only ever use it as a word processor; occasional I mock up business cards or do prompt cards, but that's just using a template or adjusting page size -- no big deal. Normally I just use 'calc' for lists of numbers, budgeting, reporting, that sort of thing, but I do recall having to do a date calculation and average calculation and referring to the 'help'. It was 'dictionary perfect' and completely useless. I went to the net-of-a-billion-lies for some practical advice and examples. Now I know better and the 'net is my first recourse.

It is *not* a wiki. However, the sentence in question is correct. Generally "Internet access is helpful" for all the installs, but obviously in the case of the network installer it is "required". It wouldn't make much sense to be a wiki... Think about it. LO writes and office suite, nobody knows how the guts of it is supposed to behave, or how to construct, e.g. a "table of authorities". And the only help on how to accomplish the task is supposedly left to non-developers to suss out by? trial-and-error? LO is a good package, but has struggled a bit with the help mess. When you need word-processor, or spread-sheet help, you need a clear, informative and robust help system for any of the advanced features. The old local installed help wasn't the best in the world, but it was much more informative than what has been moved online. It actually had screenshots detailed descriptions of how to do X, Y and Z. The online contents is more just a rough outline in a lot of areas. The lack of a good local help file, (good ole "F1" for lack of better words), seems like a "let's shoot ourselves in the foot" type moment. It can't be a drive space issue in days of Terabyte drives (or 1/4 Terrabyte SSDs). It's a bit bewildering why there isn't a good local help anymore, it takes just as much work (and manpower), if not more, to maintain online servers and publish online content as it does to simply package the help and ship it out for local install... (and you avoid the "need help now, but don't have inet connection... problem) That's not that bad for desktops, but for laptops, there are a number of times where there simply isn't public inet available. -- David C. if it is not a wiki and is administered by openSUSE people, a bug report would be the way to request corrections. certainly smoke signals will not work and I doubt many of the people who can make changes to that page spend the time to sort thru all the irrelevant postings and rants present on this list. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet freenode -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

But the openSUSE provided packages do not work, and no one has posted a solution, except don. Why do you attack so. I hope this is a friendly list. I did do what you suggested: zypper -v in --force libreoffice-l10n-en
but the files were placed in the /opt/libreoffice directory as I described previously. So I moved them to: /usr/share/libreoffice/help/en-US/
and it works. We are close to saying the same thing, except where zypper put the files.
Don
Don, all that Patrick tries to convince you of, is that you're better of using the openSUSE packages. You now have a bunch of files on your system that do not belong to any package, since they we're copied/moved manually, and hence of which rpm nor zypper are aware. These kind of things can lead to awkward situations, because you break tested integrity of the installed system. My 2 cents? Undo the manual changes, install the openSUSE package and you should be fine, also on future updates.
Please identify the opensuse package to install. I looked under Yast and saw no libreoffice help listed. I tested the zypper -v in --force libreoffice-l10n-en

Sorry if I have offended Don Sorry for my misreading. The packages in Leap15 and Tumbleweed do have the help included, none of them have in Leap 42.3. Instead of copying over files, you could create a symlink to the folder in / opt , that would make updating easier.

To date, what a fascinating thread this has been! Seeing as how fascinating it has been, I'll throw my contribution into the ring. On the same desktop I have Leap 42.3, Leap 15.0, and Tumbleweed (TW) installed and which are up-to-date (updated this morning [and every morning]). LO is the version which comes from openSUSE and is not the version installable from the LO site itself. That is, LO is totally the product of openSUSE. In each of these versions of oS, the following is shown in Yast2 for re the 'help' file(s) for LO version 6.0.3.2: http://susepaste.org/61036221 The only difference between these 3 versions of oS is that the _Help_ for LO does not "work" in Leap 42.3 but "works" in Leap 15 and TW. Why _Help_ doesn't work in Leap 42.3 but does in Leap 15 and TW bearing in mind that the 'Help' files are installed in the same directory/ies in all 3 versions of oS (see the susepaste image above) is not something I can answer. OK, I'll take your word for that. I'll also not download L15's LO help to use on 42.3 See my post to Patrick. But it does rather raise the question of why this happened. Those are all openSUSE repositories. Yes, I realise that TW and L15 are "more advanced" than 42.3 but this is the same version of LO in each case, not a more advanced LO, not a more advanced directory structure, something 'lacking' in 42.3. If the *code* of 6.0.3.2 builds and works for 64-bit machines @TW & L15 then surely the build worked for 42.3 as well otherwise the basic LO wouldn't work. That's "OxFfffffff" to you, my dear, 32-bit precision, albeit in a 64-bit world :-) And how come this problem applies only to 42.3 and not TW or L15? I don't think it can be a 32-bit/64-bit problem as we're running 64-bit on all three. I don't think it can be a kernel problem as I'm running a later model kernel on my 42.4 than there is in L15: # uname -r 4.16.5-1.g16c5ff9-default and I have 4.16.6 waiting in the wings. Don't try telling me that it's about the version of the kernel that is distributed with 42.3, 'cos all that means it that LO is crippleware and the installation can't bother checking ... no wait, its not an installation problem, it's the RPM didn't get built. What is this supposed problem then? so far nothing we've been told makes sense. Especially if I can use the help rpm from the build for L15 on 42.3. There's something going on here that is logically inconsistent.
And people here telling that if we install the help from outside we break our system further on, so only install it from openSUSE places.

Because 42.3 was released at an earlier time to TW and L15, when a different release of LO was current and the state of the help was apparently different.

<https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2017-08/msg00958.html> I don't see there anything that may explain why Tumbleweed and 15.0 do have help, and 42.3 doesn't. That thread says that LO has no offline help package, that it was removed while being redesigned, but Leap 15.0 has it, so the offline help package does exist.

Don
On my system, the files that were in /opt/ came from the rpm I manually downloaded from the document foundation, as per the other part of this thread. The said command to force the installation of the English help files did not do so, and I think this is why. I extracted the rpm from the document foundation and the rpm from the opensuse repos, and here is the difference - you can see that they are not the same. The document foundation rpm installs in the /opt directory and contains the english language help files, while the rpm from opensuse (it is not described as the help package, but as a language package) contains some English language files, but does not contain help files, and installs them in the /usr/share/libreoffice directory. Here is the tree of them both compared: From the document foundation:

From openSUSE, the libreoffice-l10n-en-6.0.3.2-18.1.noarch.rpm package:
tree from_openSUSE/ from_openSUSE/ └── usr └── share └── libreoffice └── share ├── autotext │ └── en-US │ ├── crdbus50.bau │ ├── standard.bau │ └── template.bau ├── registry │ ├── Langpack-en-US.xcd │ └── res │ └── fcfg_langpack_en-US.xcd └── wizards └── resources_en_US.properties
So I think that the original suggestion to force installation of that rpm would not install the help files in any case, because it is a set of some other english language operating files, and is not meant to be the help files. The problem is to get the help files to work you have to break dependencies and also install an unsigned package (unless someone can tell me where to get the signature for rpms downloaded from the document foundation). So I think what must have happened in 42.3 and some earlier versions is that somehow the help package was accidentally overlooked and not included in setting up packaging for opensuse. I am now a bit afraid of contributing to this thread. I learned a lot from my interactions, sorry any dumb mistakes. But the following does work. There were comments posted about corrupting possible future upgrades, but I kept a copy of the original directory, as shown below. It is just a few directory heads that are populated by the files present in the downloaded RPM. I copied the files, but a symbolic link from /usr/lib64/libreoffice/help/ to /swl/libreoffice/help/ also makes the desired files available and LO help works. It was suggested that "instead of copying over files, you could create a symlink to the folder in /opt, that would make updating easier." The error I received from Help about files not being installed was not a fatal error, so again I thought what I was doing was permissible. The /usr/lib64/libreoffice/help/en-US/en_US is at end of the tree, so I did not see where other sections would be corrupted. I had decided to learn Libreoffice, so I thought the help would be valuable to me. I can reinstate the original en-US before any upgrades.

Good it works for you like it is now, Mind, if the packagers decide to add the help to the 42.3 packages, you might run into a conflict re. the link, if so, simply remove the link, and try the update again. -- Gertjan Lettink a.k.a. Could you please add details on the symbolic link? I thought to make a link from en_US one would first have to delete the contents of that directory. If not, wouldn't their be a redundancy between the original directory heads and those that have been populated? Again, I made a copy of the original en_US so I would have the ability to return to the original state. Is the some trick in ln -s that avoids this problem? Thanks, Don I was speaking about the link you created, that made it work. Packages that have their own directory structure don't (always) follow symbolic links, and
