[SLE] Open Suse 10.1 fails each time at same place
I am trying to install Open Suse 10.1 on a Celeron 466 with 256 meg of ram. I am trying to do it via the internet and adsl connection. I downloaded the one iso and buned it to CD . I know the CD is fine as it installed once to another machine. But now whenever I try to install on the Celeron it gets to the point where it says it is configuring system and it freezes? I read on the net somewhere that others have had this problem, but no solution was presented. The computer is working fine, runs XP no problem. Kind Regards Reg

I believe minimum RAM is 512MB. Oops! Nevermind, I stand corrected. http://www.novell.com/products/suselinux/sysreqs.html * Processor: Intel: Pentium 1-4 or Xeon; AMD: Duron, Athlon, Athlon XP, Athlon MP, Athlon 64, Sempron or Opteron * Main memory: At least 256 MB; 512 MB recommended * Hard disk: At least 500 MB for minimal system; 3 GB recommended for standard system * Sound and graphics cards: Supports most modern sound and graphics cards Dunno. I'm guessing a trip to the computer store is in order. :) -- kai - www.perfectreign.com www.livebeans.com - the new NetBeans community 43...for those who require slightly more than the answer to life, the universe and everything. -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

43...for those who require slightly more than the answer to life, the universe and everything. I have not tried it myself but I believe that if you go for a no graphics install, you can get Suse up and running and it will run moderately well on 256M but memory is relatively cheap these days and it will speed up your system a lot. I don't know if having a larger Linux Swap file partition would make a difference. Ralph Ellis

How about XFce? Does it come under "other" desktops in the install? Andy Goss -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

Wrong. Because:
* Main memory: At least 256 MB; 512 MB recommended
You wrote it yourself in the same email! :P But a swap file might help with 256 MB. ;) Cheers, Leen -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

I think we'll need to know a bit more of your hardware config. A freeze-up is often caused by a hardware problem. As others have mentioned, 256Mb RAM is on the low end, but it's certainly enough to get the install done. However, a Celeron 466 is also a bit on the low end ... might it still be working, but just taking a long time? Have you tried swapping to a virtual console? Ctrl-Alt-F1? Finally, _exactly_ where does it freeze? Have you configured the software selection, i.e. has it actually started installing stuff? /Per Jessen, Zürich -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

FWIW, I have SUSE 10.1 running on a 700 MHz Duron & 256 MB. I've also got 10.0 running on an 833 MHz P3 and 128 MB, though this one doesn't normally run with a graphical desktop, as it's my firewall. -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

Yeah, I too have 10.1 running on fairly low end hardware - I think Pentium II 400MHz 256M is probably as low as I have tried. Works fine, although it really needs 384M for KDE to be useful. /Per Jessen, Zürich -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

KDE &10.1 is OK, on that 833 MHz P3 & 256M, though not quite as snappy as on my Athlon 64 3200 & IGB system(64b SUSE 10.1). I've also got 10.0 running on an 1.1 GHz P3 & 384MB (ThinkPad), which is quite usable. -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com
