Huh? My thoughts entirely. I just logged into my machine at work and was presented with this prompt: I have no name!@anat0010:~> What is going on here - I've been having all sorts of weird problems relating to being unable to run openoffice, and I'm beginning to suspect that my environment is screwed (or I've been hacked). How can I go about checking whether something is wrong with my environment? Or worse still......... Cheers, Jon.
You could look for something wrong in /etc/passwd (like a uid mismatch), or something screwed up in /etc/bashrc or $HOME/.bash_profile Try: echo $USER And you should see your username. If you don't, I think the problem is in /etc/passwd. Then, try this: PS1="${HOST}:"'${PWD}'" # " It sets the command prompt to the default for root (by changing the PS1 variable). If you see everything's ok, try this: PS1="${USER}@${HOST}:"'${PWD}'"# " Now you should see your_user_name@hostname:pwd# as the command prompt. Jonathan Brooks wrote:
