Cristie external USB HDD, kernel upgrade, USB HID, problems
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Okay, here's the situ: Previously happy Sony Vaio laptop (GR114SK) with SuSE 8.0, and kernel 2.4.17, because I needed a patch for that kernel version to make the audio work, and it didn't with SuSE's 2.4.18... The internal keyboard and mousepad don't work. Hardware problem, nothing to do with Linux, but after my previous experiences with Sony's tech monkeys I'd rather run it with a USB keyboard and mouse than let them get their hands on it. No PS/2 port. All working fine, until I added a Cristie 40Gb external USB HDD. I can mount the drive, and create a reiser partition on it no problems... But when I copy any large amount of stuff to it, my system pretty much freezes after about a minute of disk activity. Sometimes it comes back to life again after a minute or two, but sometimes it dosen't. (Or at least, I get bored and restart the machine.) So, I updated to kernel 2.4.19, and I also tried 2.4.20-pre5. Whenever I build and install these kernels, my USB keyboard and mouse stop working, and I am thus unable to log in to my machine. (Networking is also down, as I need to be booted up under the correct kernel version when I compile the driver. Natch.) Any ideas how I can..? Make my Cristie USB HDD work properly under 2.4.17? Make my USB keyboard and mouse work under 2.4.19? When I built 2.4.19, I just copied my existing .config file from 2.4.17, which in itself is an exact copy of SuSE's 2.4.18, ran make menuconfig and made no changes, then make, make modules, make modules_install. So my settings are pretty much the same, and I can't therefore understand why my computer can't see my keybaord and mouse any more. It *does* flash something up about HID devices being detected, a keyboard and a pointer, but they don't do anything. (Caps lock key won't toggle light, no mouse movement under X) Any ideas? I'm feeling a little stuck on this one.
