One thing I strongly believe in is buying the SuSE Distribution on each release. Sure, I can boot into DOS and make an FTP connection, download enough to get me started, and install the entire OS over the net. I always buy the distribution when it comes out. I figure it's the least I can do to for these folks who put so much into creating it. So, I encourage anyone who uses SuSE to by the distribution every time it is released. Steve

I think buying the Professional Version is a great way to show support for SuSE overall. I definitely understand the feelings about what is going on. Not long ago the company I work for went through a similar time. I won't bore everyone with the name; but it is a Linux company in the bay area :) Not the folks with redhats though... So anyways, buy the distribution. Its worth every penny and then some. I have to say that I have traveled around a bit using Linux and I still use a variety of them. I have used SuSE since about 5.0 and enjoyed it then. I have always appreciated the participation of the SuSE folks on the list. The distribution has always seemed so well put together and thought out. I have always come away with a distinct appreciation of the effort and technical approach of SuSE Linux. Thanks for everything SuSE! -- Michael Perry mperry@tsoft.com ------------------

Seems to me that we _shouldn't_ do that. SuSE should realize it must release quality non-buggy products. They must realize they should contribute key components back in GPL form, and not use some oddball non-open source license. They should realize that product mostly consisting of other people's code shouldn't cost the same as the so-called "Evil Empire's expensive operating system." They should realize cutting out talented employees that helped _us_ on this list is worse than cutting the tech support that we really don't need anyway... SuSE is becoming arrogant, IMO. We shouldn't support arrogance. -Tim ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. Butler Universal Networks Information Tech. Tim, Lastnight I installed Mandrake 7.2 on my home box. It was very full of eye candy and cute little Windowish config tools..but when I went in and got under the hood. It's no where near SuSE 7.1. I may have been really pissed off lastnight..rightly so...but I will continue to run SuSE Linux because it's the f**king best. I learned that lastnight. I also made the decision to stay on the list from home. I may not have the access to SuSE's internal dev lists that I have for the last 10 months..but who cares. 7.1 is a damn fine distribution and let me tell ya it's work more then what you would pay for W2K (I am not starting a win vs. linux debate)..just talking about cost and value. I am truely impressed on a geek level with this thing and if I hadn't burned a copy at work. I would buy it as I have from 5.1 --> 6.4 ..and I will buy 7.2 because I have a lot of friends in Germany who do this and do a good job. I know a lot of these people love Linux..SuSE Linux and I will help my friends feed their families if I can. It's changing world..5 years ago..$24 for for an infomagic set of CD's was what Linux was worth. It's grown up and so has the cost of producing a product that just doesn't go on a spare partition..but can be used as the only product on the machine. Everyone asked what they can do for me...let me get my shit together. I will stick around..and everybody just sit back and calm down on the price war issue. Thanks. * Timothy R. My son bought a Mandrake 7.0 distro at the b&n last fall and I helped him install it. Your right about the eye candy, but their install program wasn't as good as YaST, and under the hood it was just a sightly cleaned up RH 6.0. He bought SuSE 6.4 and clean installed it. I could not get past the eye candy either..... Everytime I see pictures of there Penguin it looks totally stoned to me. Or drunk, or in some sort of shock therapy....Sorry, could not even install it to take a closer look. Matt On Thursday 08 February 2001 10:23 pm, Jerry Kreps wrote:

Yeah, I had a feeling. I tried it also recently (downloaded an ISO), and it refused to install LILO, but continued on without a warning message that explicitly told you the it had trouble installing LILO. Thus I went on my merry way only to find the LM system wouldn't boot. :-( Still, while Linux-Mandrake isn't as good as SuSE, Mandrake does seem to be working hard, and with a package similar to SuSE Pro out now, they may provide competition in the future.

Glad to hear it!
